How cool is this Lewis Hamilton helmet cake. Second time doing this same design but I just love it.
It’s definitely art and a lot of skill to pull this off.

Ok so I get asked what’s the difference between coatings all the time and here’s a little example to help.
It’s really hard for me to know what finish you would like on a cake when you don’t know the difference yourself.

Fondant icing is a firm coating which can be moulded into shapes for decoration. Also traditionally found on Christmas cakes and birthday cakes.

Buttercream is the same as the filling between your layers and has a soft buttery finish.

And then there’s the difference between layers and tiers. Layers are the number of sponges in a single cake. I normally use 3 for standard cakes. More or less depending on the design.
Tiers are the number of whole cakes stacked together in different sizes.
