🎂 “IT’S JUST A CAKE”… IS IT THOUGH? 🤔
Have you ever asked a tattoo artist to justify the price of a tattoo by breaking down the cost of the ink?
Have you ever asked a florist why their bouquet costs more than the price of the flowers?
Have you ever asked a mechanic to charge you only for the spare parts and forget about their labour, knowledge and expertise?
Or asked a photographer to charge you only for the camera they use, rather than the years of experience behind the lens?
Probably not! Yet, somehow, when it comes to celebration cakes, the question often becomes…
“Why is it so expensive? It’s only a cake!” 🎂
Well, let me tell you… it’s never JUST a cake.
You’re not simply paying for flour, sugar, butter, eggs and icing.
You’re paying for the years of practice, the skills developed, the techniques mastered and the experience it takes to turn a vision into something beautiful.
You’re paying for the time spent planning your design, sourcing ingredients, baking from scratch, making fillings, preparing buttercream, colouring icing, creating decorations, assembling, stacking, smoothing, piping and adding all those little details that make your cake unique.
You’re paying for the equipment, electricity, overheads, packaging, and the countless hours of work that often go unseen.
You’re paying for the creativity, the precision, the patience and the knowledge needed to make sure your cake not only looks amazing but tastes delicious, too.
And let’s not forget the responsibility that comes with creating the centrepiece for your wedding, birthday, baby shower, anniversary or other special occasion. You’re trusting someone to help make a memory that will be photographed, shared and remembered for years to come. ❤️
Just like a tattoo artist creates wearable art, a florist creates floral arrangements, a carpenter creates bespoke furniture and a photographer captures once-in-a-lifetime moments, a cake artist creates edible art.
You’re not paying for what it costs me to make a cake. You’re paying for what it takes to create it.
Of course, supermarket cakes have their place, and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with choosing one. But a bespoke celebration cake is a different product, created with a different level of time, care, detail and personalisation.
Every cake is made with love, but love alone doesn’t pay for the ingredients, the equipment, the hours of work or the skills behind it.
So the next time you look at a bespoke cake and wonder why it costs what it does, remember this:
🎂 You’re not just buying cake. You’re buying craftsmanship, creativity, time, skill and a little piece of edible magic. ✨
And that is worth so much more than the cost of the ingredients.
