MUM OF THREE STARTS CUSTOM BAKERY BUSINESS
Busy mum of three, Cheryll Williams, has started a bakery business from home specializing in one-of-a-kind custom cakes.
Cheryll recently started the business, Cakey McCakeface, after baking her son a birthday ‘Gruffalo’ cake and subsequently realising her incredible culinary talents.
“I really badly wanted to make him a Gruffalo cake, we couldn’t afford one! So, I did…”
She had been on maternity leave from her retail cashiers job and instead decided to pursue cake making as a business, since then she has seen a steady rise in demand for her cakes.
Cheryll makes bespoke cakes for all occasions including child and adult birthdays, weddings, baby showers, and christenings. Most recently she made a flower bouquet cake for a client to celebrate Mother’s Day. Some of her work, including this particular floral piece, looks more like a piece of art with its intricate details and realistic appearance.
“One of the most detailed cakes I’ve done is the Harry Potter 2 tier, with the hand painted map, I love to paint on the cakes.”
Some of her work includes the Iron Throne from the series Games of Thrones, a 500ml bottle of Disaronno, a giant Cadburys cream egg and life-size DJ decks.
Cheryll has taught herself everything she knows and says that she is constantly learning more with each new order. She enjoys baking with her children and sometimes they muck in and help. She tells me although she loves what she does, it’s not always easy but that it keeps thing interesting. She recalls once working in the dark by candlelight to finish decorating 96 Christmas cupcakes on time.
“I’ve learned everything I know online, through YouTube tutorials, a fabulous bakers page, and the lovely ladies in my local supply shop, as every cake is different, most have come with something new to learn! It’s been a crazy year!”
