In February, I started making sourdough. When you feed your starter regularly, you end up with leftover starter called “discard,” which can be used in cakes, cookies, and other baked treats.

One of my favorite things to make with it has become these sourdough discard granola bars. They’re made with oats, h**p hearts, egg whites, protein powder, and just a little honey, plus bittersweet chocolate. They’re a well-balanced snack with a good amount of fiber and protein.

My nephew, Paul Daniel, graduated from high school on Thursday in Lawrence, Massachusetts, and I was so fortunate to be there to celebrate him — and to make the cake and cupcakes for his graduation party today!

The first “fancy” cake I ever made was for his first birthday 18 years ago, so this week has been full of those where did the time go? moments. I’m so happy to be here baking, spending time with family and friends, and celebrating my kind, funny, and incredibly smart nephew as he heads off to Louisiana State University to study mechanical engineering!

Today’s office = the kitchen 👩‍🍳

I spent the day leading an Italian cooking class with a fantastic group over at Yacro, and we went all in—caprese salad, arancini, meatballs, handmade ravioli, pesto cream sauce, focaccia, and cannoli from scratch. So much laughter, great energy, and seriously good food.

• Lemon Dream: Vanilla cupcake FILLED with lemon curd, topped with vanilla Swiss meringue buttercream

• Double Chocolate Raspberry: Chocolate cupcake FILLED with seedless raspberry jam (made by yours truly), topped with chocolate Swiss meringue buttercream

(FUN FACT!: Swiss meringue buttercream has about 30–50% less sugar than traditional buttercream! It's my favorite because it's not too sweet)
