Running a handmade business is not all glitz and glam✨, if you were gifted a Cricut machine over the holidays 🎄 and you are thinking of monetizing it💰, here are 5 things I wish I knew before starting my crafty business ✂️✨⬇️.

if you’re new here, welcome 😊! Hi, my name is Cassandra and I am the creative force behind Paper Beau 💌. I make customizable greeting cards, cake toppers, birthday banners and more.

1. Although a lot of our creations contain glitter, there’s nothing glamorous about being a small crafty business. It’s often quite stressful!

2. It’s not so hard to get around using the Cricut machine. The Cricut may let you down and usually while in the middle of a project that is due 🙃.

3. In the beginning it’s hard to defend your prices but if I can offer anyone one piece of advice, never fold. You have to factor in your time, the multiple fails, the material, factor it in or you operate at a loss.

4. I love making crafty friends on IG, you will too. But there lots of crafty accounts, amazing and talented people, meaning it’s not a bad idea to try and stand out with your craft.

5. You do not have to start with all the expensive tools and subscriptions. Start with what you have and build as you grow.

This post is very late but here we go 🙃. There’s no “new year new me crap” in this post, but as you saw in my carousel, there are lessons learned that I will carry with me into 2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣6️⃣!

Since my first maternity leave in 2023, I thought I was going to do so much in terms of creating and marketing. I didn’t realise how much time it would take away from being a mom (in the beginning). So I took a step back, and came to terms with the level of custom orders I would accept.

Coming to terms with my new reality was hard. But I have come to terms with, I don’t have a full system like I did pre-babies, but it’s getting there✅.

Because of my vision for 2026, making time to refuel here and there will be important for my well being and to refresh my creative juices. We have a brand new xTool laser cutter that can engrave, cut acrylic and wood and nevemind what it can do on cardstock😍✨.

I had big plans while on maternity leave for Paper Beau, but the more I thought about it I knew it meant time away from my family.

During the last two years, my life has changed. I became a mom to two beautiful babies. I have had to learn to be kinder to myself, and to really think about what is realistic.

Boundaries can be a scary thing for micro and small businesses. But most of you have been receptive and understanding of the changes at Paper Beau 🩷.

This year we’ve met new people via inquiries (despite not being 100% active), and we are incredibly thrilled about this.

2025 was definitely the year of growth and reflection for Paper Beau. I have high hopes for 2026 🤭🩷.

Finally, I cannot stress how grateful I am to have made it as a finalist for the 2026 Canadian Choice Award, in the Artisan Shop category✨. The last day to help me secure the win, by filling out a form (takes a few minutes), is December 29, 2025. You guuuyssss! Ok I’m excited to share my son’s first birthday theme 🙊! His birthday was in March, he turned one 🥹🩷.

is the BEST tool for birthday inspos 🥳. I did an inspo board to help me plan his birthday 🗒️.

As you can see we did a football theme for his first birthday “One Down 🏈”.

I did gable (treat boxes), I tried to keep the food table themed 😂 (flags). I also did the milestone birthday banner. It’s nice to put up photos of your baby each month and see how they’ve grown 🥹!

As always, did an amazing cake 🩷.

And did our balloon arrangement 🩷🎈.

I’m telling you I love a good custom themed birthday, it’s make it all that more special 🥰.
