In Memory of Shyna Rose
Batter and Crumb has come a long way since its founding, including myself.
Let me introduce myself first. My name is Ally and I am the original founder of Batter and Crumb. I have been baking for what seems like an eternity and started very young (lets just leave it at that haha). I trained in commercial baking and have done my qual in patisserie. I love everything sweet! I have been decorating custom cakes for over 4 years in my own business, and have been making cakes and sweets for over 10 years, which brings me to the reason why we are here.
In 2016, i was given the biggest miracle any woman could hope for. As someone who suffers severe PCOS i was unable to conceive naturally, and then our miracle happened. By our 20 week scan i found out we were having our little girl, Shyna Rose. Shyna means “God’s Blessing” and that she truly was. Our story wasnt the sunshine happy ending we all hope for as parents. Shyna was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. A congenital heart defect that was terminal. At 25 weeks pregnant i decided that if we were going to raise a sick child i would need to work from home. From a need to earn money while raising our sick daughter Batter and Crumb was born. In a tiny town house with an even smaller kitchen i made the first custom cake, cried into the fridge a few times, and watched my first creation leave the house the next day.
After a long battle in hospital, we decided to turn of Shyna’s life support after 2 major open heart surgeries, a calcium burn to her arm and a range of awful infections. Like all parents...we got lost in despair and grief. But our story changed for the better.
