Kifli I started baking before I was even brave enough to turn on my parents old oven back in Hungary. This is where my story begins….

When my life bought me to Australia, I was left with a void and a deep longing for Hungarian cakes, desserts and flavors.

Another typical Hungarian breakfast is definitely Kifli with Téliszalámi, Trapista Cheese and Paprika. 😍

An old fashion ( but tireless) Hungarian breakfast 😁🤩🤩🤩

Szalonna (Speck) and Töpörtyű (pork crackers) with fresh sourdough, honey sweet cocktail tomatoes and paprika.

The dessert is a delicious pastry with poppyseed filling of course. 😅🤩🤩🤩🤩

Cigánypecsenye 😁😍😍

Cigánypecsenye (Gypsy roast) is a popular Hungarian meat dish whose origins are shrouded in mystery. It probably evolved from the strong spiced dishes of the wandering Roma communities, cooked over an open fire, and from the world of traditional Hungarian lac cuisine, before becoming a truly classic restaurant dish in the hospitality of socialism.

Bacon on the top: In the past, fried gypsy bacon (thick smoked bacon) was placed on top of juicy pork.
Gypsy seasoning: In Hungarian gastronomy, the adjective "gypsy" refers to a lot of meat, a fatty, juicy character, and strong, garlicky seasoning.
Open-air baking: It preserves the tradition of quick, simple, charcoal-grilled dishes from the village kitchens and fairs.

So good 🤩🤩🤩

The history of Búrkifli dates back to the 19th-century Austro-Hungarian Monarchy, especially to the culture of Viennese pastry and baking, when the combination of buttery puff pastry and rich, sweet seeds (poppy seeds and walnuts) gave rise to new forms of classic breakfast and snack pastries.

For a poppy lover like me, this is always a good choice.🤩🤩🤩

One of the most popular Hungarian beach dishes is undoubtedly Lángos.🤩🤩🤩

Lángos originates from the time of bread baking. It gets its name from the word flame because in the past it was baked close to the blazing embers of the oven. It was originally made from leftover bread dough. Frying in oil came later. Today it is a favorite Hungarian street food.

Today's version, fried in oil, developed later. It became a staple food on beaches and markets. The favorite toppings are sour cream and cheese and, of course, garlic.

During our holiday visiting Budapest we found a lovely confectionery (cake shop).
Pretty and romantic style and mouth-watering cakes. We tried Somlói galuska, Mákvirág, Eszterházy szelet, Chocolate cake, Pozsonyi kifli (I’ll definitely make them for the market soon 🙂 ) and a selection of savoury bites. 🤩

The country's cake has been chosen since 2007 on August 20, the day of the founding of the state. The initiative was launched by the National Association of Hungarian Confectioners at the request of the government, and the first winner was the Bird's Milk Cake made by László Zila.

Main goal to promote new, creative recipes that showcase Hungarian flavors and the values of Hungarian confectionery.

We’re lucky enough to try Poppy Flower: The winning cake of the year 2024. 🙂

Paradicsomos káposzta Aka Tomato cabbage

Tomato cabbage is a classic, popular vegetable dish of Hungarian cuisine and traditional canteens, which was born from the meeting of cabbage and the later widespread tomato in Hungarian gastronomy.

The sour taste of the tomato goes well with the sweet, soft character of the cabbage; the jerky, cumin-laced preparation method is characteristic of Hungarian vegetable culture.

One of my favourites from canteens food. 😁🤩🤩🤩🤩
