Kifli I started baking before I was even brave enough to turn on my parents old oven back in Hungary. This is where my story begins….

When my life bought me to Australia, I was left with a void and a deep longing for Hungarian cakes, desserts and flavors.

Kiflis are most often grouped by their ingredients, preparation method or filling. There is a wide variety.

🧈 Savory and classic pastries Butter kifli: classic, made with soft, flaky dough, high in fat.

🥛Milk kifli: Traditional, with a thicker filling, the basis of most breakfasts and sandwiches.

🧀 Cheese or caraway kifli: A straight-shaped, crispy savory pastry.

Wholemeal or rye kifli: A healthier, fiber-rich alternative made from brown flour.

🎄Sweet and festive pastries Pozsonyi kifli: a pastry made from traditional yeast dough, generously filled with poppy seeds or nuts.

🌰 Kossuth-kifli: a soft, crumbly tea cake, sprinkled with powdered sugar, often made with nuts.

🍫Jam or chocolate kifli: A pastry with a sweet filling hidden in the dough.

Our chocolate-orange Kifli will be available soon at Kifli. 🍫🍊🧡

Kalács aka Braided sweet bread ❤️

Kalács is a festive, more exclusive version of bread. It first appeared in Hungarian written sources in the 14th century. Initially, round, so-called wheeled, loaves similar to everyday bread were baked. The tradition of braided kalács began to spread in the 19th century. Braiding not only provided a decorative appearance, but also symbolized unity and belonging. ❤️

Since kalács was previously considered a luxury item, in Hungarian traditions it became a sacred dish for the biggest holidays of the year – especially Easter and Christmas.

Also kalács was one of the most missed Hungarian baked goods for me and they inspired me to start baking. 🙂 ❤️

Gundel Palacsinta Aka Crepes of Gundel

Márai palacsinta 1940. Sándor Márai's play Adventure was presented at the National Chamber Theatre. The banquet following the successful premiere was held at the legendary Gundel restaurant in Városliget. For the occasion, the writer's wife prepared a special dessert based on a family recipe, filled with ground walnuts, raisins, candied orange peel and rum, and topped with a rich chocolate sauce. Károly Gundel was so impressed with the dessert that he immediately added it to the menu.

For a long time, the dessert was called Márai-palacsinta on the Gundel restaurant menu. However, due to the political changes after World War II, communist nationalization, and the Márai couple's emigration in 1948, Gundel could no longer be associated with the banned writer. It was then that it received the name Gundel-palacsinta, which is still known today.

It’s surely the queen of all Hungarian desserts for me!

Mesekeksz aka Fairytale biscuits 😍😍😍

If someone knows me well they would know that I’m a big Christmas lover. 🎄

The Australian winter brings me back lots of memories and feelings of Christmas in Europe. With orange and mandarins, christmasy spices in the air, the beautiful fireplace…

The story of the iconic Fairytale biscuit began in 1985 in the Halmajugra factory of the Hungarian-owned Detki Keksz. The cinnamon-honey flavoured tea biscuit, which has enjoyed unwavering popularity ever since, was a successful product of an initiative launched in the early eighties and was sold in stores under names such as Zsófi tea biscuits or Konzum biscuits.

It has beautiful designs on the outside and they are just heavenly.

One of my forever favorites.🤩

Pogácsa aka Cheese puff, Pogi

Pogácsa is one of the oldest Hungarian savory pastries, dating back to ancient Rome. The characteristic small, round pastry that is known today has traveled a long gastronomic and cultural journey, before going from being a wandering object in Hungarian folk tales to an indispensable staple on everyday tables.

In Hungarian folk tales, a “pogácsa” baked in ashes and packed in a special bag symbolizes the strength required for a journey and the security home brings you. ❤️

Gyümölcskenyér, aka Fruit-bread 🤩

Brings me back lots of memories from my childhood. My mother’s aunt, Szentiványi-Székely Margit made these for us for special occasions. It’s so rich in sour-cherries, nuts, dried fruits.
During cherry season you’d find this delicious cake on lots of plates in Hungary. 😍
