News Sweet potato is a major component of diet for rural communities in Zimbabwe. It is used for both breakfast and main meals. In recent years, urban communities having started consuming sweet potatoes as boiled snack and sometimes as in place of bread. There are figures for total production of sweet potatoes but estimates say about 200 000mt are produced each year. Sweet potato at the moment does not have well defined markets. Much of the market is localized with limited quantities informally exported to Bostwana, Namibia and South Africa. However, Ngatirimei Agri- Expects seeks to establish export markets in Malaysia and Singapore and all over the globe. The company has since approached Horticulture Promotion Council (HPC) and Malaysian Embassy to facilitate in market linkages. Export markets will improve farmer capability and financial return.

Ngatirimei Agri Experts’ is involved in sweet potato vine production and distribution to smallholder farmers and commercial farmers in Zimbabwe. The Company has been making use of recycled planting material resulting in declined sweet potato yields due sweet potato mosaic virus. Ngatirimei intends to have sweet potato planting materials screened for viruses.
