The story of Baked by Nels
My baking journey began long before I even knew it would become a business. I can still remember being in Grade 1, rushing home from school, brimming with excitement, eager to bake muffins before even starting my homework. More often than not, there was more dough around my mouth than in the pan, and yet, it was some of the happiest moments I shared with my grandmother.
Even before Grade 1, I spent hours in her kitchen, learning the magic of combining simple ingredients into something wonderful. I loved helping her crack eggs, gathering random items from the cupboards, and mixing them together—even if she sometimes refused to eat our “experiments.” By the age of 10, I baked my first Swiss roll—a notoriously tricky cake—and felt a pride I had never known before. Those moments with my grandmother were not just about baking; they were my happiest childhood memories. Her kitchen was a place of comfort, laughter, and love. When life felt hard, or when things at home were difficult, baking with her became my safe escape, my happy distraction.
As I grew older, I gained more skills and knowledge, learning how to turn that early love of baking into something more refined. My grandmother, now older and more fragile, has faced serious health scares that remind me just how precious time is. The bakery I have today is more than just a business—it is a tribute to her, to the warmth and love she poured into me through every recipe, every shared smile, and every messy, joyful kitchen moment.
Every cupcake, cookie, and cake I make carries a piece of that love, and every order I fulfill is a way to keep her spirit alive in the heart of my kitchen. This business is for my grandmother—the woman who taught me that the best ingredients in any recipe are love, patience, and joy
