The Factory Shop supplies goods direct to the public. Specializing in dough/yeast products - almost Showcasing what is available in our Factory Shop.
Popular lines are always available - however, sometimes there are production over runs or product that does not quite meet the high visual standards of our retailers. This is where we will tell you about their availability. Steven likes to be creative too - so look here for a heads up regarding unique, even one of a kind goodies.

As Aristotle said "Change in all things is sweet..." and this, my friends, is a very sweet change.
After a 7 year collaboration, a long term goal has been achieved, and Hometown Master Confectioners has acquired Buttercup Bakery.
But don't be too alarmed! The Buttercup Bakery Brand will still be produced, from it's factory in Newton Park and available through our supporting Retailers. The Team will be the same, the ingredients and packaging will be the same, and most importantly, the passion with which the products are made and the dedication to service excellence, will all be the same.
While our website and online store will be closed, you can still phone us on 0413651255 or WhatsApp on 082 461 7138
We thank you for your valued support and look forward to continuing to sharing our love of baked goods with you.

Luckily my visit to Buttercup Bakery coincided with their Kosher production yesterday... There's something so soothing about watching the plaiting of kitkes...

If you pop into The Shop today, you're in for a sweet surprise 😆 The Master Baker is test baking a potential new Hot Cross Bun flavour - can you guess what it is?
*Red Velvet and White Chocolate Chip* 💃
Still too hot to taste or pack right now (they do smell delicious) - but they should be ready and waiting for you around 13h00
We'll offer them to you at R24.00 per packet - if you get to taste them, let me know what you think 😋
Please welcome our newest addition to the Buttercup Shop! It's a (really) soft, white loaf that is sliced for your convenience. Finding the standard loaf of white bread too big? Then this loaf is perfect for you. It is ideal for sandwiches with a lovely soft texture - but not too soft that it can't handle a good dollop of butter... 😉
Click on the link above to view the product in our online shop...

This family bakery that loves to feed families was established in 1961 by Louis Allyson. In 1969 it was bought by the Britos Brothers and David Bernstein. It underwent a name change – from The Cake Shop to Buttercup Bakery – inspired by a bakery in Australia that enchanted Manual Brito. Prior to joining the Buttercup Bakery Team, David Bernstein was running a plant bakery in Witbank for Premier Milling.
Circa the late 1970’s or early 1980’s, David Bernstein took full ownership of Buttercup Bakery and there have always been number of Bernsteins working there at any given time since. Steven Bernstein, our Master Baker and youngest son of David Bernstein, started helping out in 1985, whether it be as bread slicer, carrier of crates or assisting drivers on their deliveries. He joined permanently in 1989 – his first responsibility was the making of Cornish and Steak & Kidney Pies – from scratch. Don’t you just love how, when working in a family business, you invariably start at the bottom?
At this stage, Buttercup Bakery was a Retail Bakery and a household name in Port Elizabeth. We still have some customers popping into our Factory Shop reminiscing about the “good old days” and their favourite products! As time marches on the frequency of these visits’ declines – but we treasure each and every one.
The Retail Shop had a wide offering of products ranging from confectionery – {Cakes (Fresh Cream * Caramel * Bee Sting * Black Forest), Cream Horns, Shoe Soles, Doughnuts, Swiss Rolls} - to savouries {Sausage Rolls and Pies} – to a large bread basket {French Bread * French Oval Loaf * Crispy Rolls * Coney Rolls * Mini French Loaf * Rye}. They also produced Government Bread which you could only do under license at the time.
In 1991, the wheat and baking industries were deregulated and this saw the rapid growth of in-store and franchise bakeries – changing the face of the industry entirely. It was around this time that Buttercup Bakery became a Wholesale Bakery - supplier to the large retail stores – and our Factory Shop was born. This is also how Steven developed his impressive reversing skills – sometimes there was no other way to get your van to receiving without reversing between two really large trucks – with millimeters to spare on either side…
David and his wife, Zelda, retired or rather semi-retired (you can’t really give up your passion entirely, can you?) in 2010 and that’s when I joined – Olivia Bernstein, otherwise known as “The Baker’s Wife”.
Together we carry on the tradition of producing high quality products with great passion! When you have a love for food and flour in your veins, what choice do you have? The products we offer now have changed immensely from 1980 (haven’t most things?) and we concentrate on producing and developing the best yeast lines imaginable.
One thing that has not changed – next to our employees, our customers are the most important part of our business. We love feedback (good and bad – we learn from both), we love it when our products become part of your family feasts and daily treats, we love being able to provide you with nourishing food to either get you through your day or to look forward to at the end of the day.
Our hope is to inspire you to create more beautiful food for your families and see the return of the family meal – one like we were raised on.
