Farmers across KZN are identifying problem roads.

As Kwanalu continues highlighting deteriorating rural roads, farmers and rural communities are responding by identifying problem routes across KZN.

Every road name, location and account of deteriorating conditions helps make an issue experienced locally visible at a provincial level.

Kwanalu continues to raise rural road infrastructure through organised agriculture and advocate for sustained maintenance and accountable intervention.

Nedbank Project: Building a sustainable farming future takes commitment, knowledge and support that meets farmers where they are. 🌱

In Donnybrook, Nqobile Memela is developing his farming journey through Kwanalu’s Women and Youth in Rural Entrepreneurship (WYRE) initiative. His focus remains on strengthening production, improving consistency and creating opportunities through agriculture.

With Nedbank support, Nqobile is gaining guidance, mentorship and practical knowledge to help him work towards a more sustainable and commercially viable farming operation. 🌾

Kwanalu CEO Sandy La Marque joined fellow agricultural voices at the Royal Show for a conversation hosted by FNB and Food For Mzansi on collaboration and the development of commercial farmers.

A deteriorating rural road does not only make a journey more difficult. For farmers, poor road conditions can mean additional wear on vehicles and machinery, slower journeys and greater difficulty moving people, inputs and agricultural products where they need to go.

Across KZN, farmers continue to identify rural roads where deterioration is affecting everyday farming operations and the communities that depend on these routes.

These roads are economic infrastructure. Their condition matters.

A productive farm is not automatically a profitable farm.

Farmers must continually balance the cost of producing food against what they are able to earn from what they produce. Electricity, fertiliser, fuel, transport and other operating costs all form part of that equation.

When margins are under pressure, decisions become harder - not only about the next season, but about investment, employment and the long-term viability of the farming business.

These are not challenges individual farmers can influence alone. Organised agriculture gives farmers a collective platform to raise the realities affecting agricultural viability and ensure they form part of wider industry engagement.

The journey from farm to table doesn't begin at the supermarket.

It begins on farms connected to the rest of the country by roads - roads used to bring in inputs, move agricultural products and keep rural businesses and communities connected.

The conditions documented in farming areas such as Kamberg and Underberg demonstrate why rural infrastructure deserves sustained attention.

Food travels these roads too.

Through Kwanalu’s Women and Youth in Rural Entrepreneurship (WYRE) initiative, emerging farmers are developing the practical business, planning and leadership skills needed to take their enterprises forward. 👩‍🌾
As WYRE moves into its Accelerator phase with support from Nedbank , participants will receive structured mentorship, business guidance and technical agricultural support designed to help them strengthen their farming enterprises and their participation in agricultural value chains. 💪
From the farm to the business behind it, the focus is on developing capable, confident agricultural entrepreneurs for the future.

Farmers plan months ahead. The weather doesn't always follow the plan.

As producers prepare for the months ahead, attention is increasingly turning to the developing El Niño and the possibility that it could become an unusually strong - or “Super” - event. While its eventual intensity and local impact remain uncertain, a strong El Niño can increase the risk of hotter, drier summer conditions in parts of Southern Africa.

For farmers, uncertainty itself requires planning - around water, planting decisions, grazing, inputs and the resilience of their businesses.

These are the realities agriculture navigates season after season. Kwanalu will continue keeping members informed and ensuring farmers' interests remain represented as conditions develop.
