A Journey to Joy

A Journey to Joy Professional organiser trained by Marie Kondo helping busy individuals on their journey towards organised, well-managed & joyful spaces.

For a busy individual like you, the home is a retreat and safe haven from an otherwise fast-paced lifestyle. Yet with limited time, or not knowing where to start, setting your home in order can seem like a mountain you’d rather not climb alone. Decluttering is personal and can be an overwhelming experience, but on the other side of the journey, your ideal lifestyle awaits. When you declutter and

set your home in order, you have more time for the things and people that make you happy. Whether you are relocating, downsizing/moving, or simply want a more well-managed home life, my professional organising service is discrete, methodical and based on an intentional approach to tidying called The KonMari Method®.

Thank you all for an amazing 2022 filled with so much joy.

I am sending you my warmest thoughts and best wishes for a wonderful holiday season.

May you be happy and blessed not just on Christmas Day but throughout the year.

Embarking on a journey to joy is not a magic switch that sets everything in place right away.

There will be bumps in the road, some things will spark joy more than others, and life will lead you in some unexpected directions.

No matter where your journey ends this year, be proud of how far you have come and celebrate how far you will go.

Because your journey is not over yet!

In 2022 I had the most amazing time crafting a business that resonated with my core values and helped my clients achieve a well managed and joyful life.

And one of the things that has always set me apart as a professional organiser is my Quantity Surveyor background.

I am excited to share that I will be taking some time away to focus on a once in a lifetime QS opportunity.

This is not the end of AJTJ, but rather a new chapter.

Thank you to all my clients for making this the most meaningful and magical year I could have asked for.

F O C U S

Hello friend! How was your first week of December?

As we all slow down for the holidays, I have been reminded to focus.

Focus on what feels right for you.

Focus on what allows you to lead a happy and healthy lifestyle.

Focus on taking small steps towards what sparks joy.

Sometimes you enter or exit a year with all sorts of plans, but ultimately there is a much bigger plan for your life. 🤍

I won’t lie. 2022 has surprised me but I am blessed and looking forward to turning my focus inward for the rest of the year.

What are you focused on?

So many of us resonated with this week’s post about having a digital clutter-free Christmas that I am continuing the conversation…

When you are an organised or meticulous person, you are sometimes judged for the choices you make to keep your space in order.

The same can be said for drawing boundaries online.

Some people might get offended if you unfollow them.

Others may want to you respond to messages at any time of the day or night.

But the more you honour your own boundaries, the more open you can be when others share a boundary with you.

Remember boundaries are not drawn to keep something out, but to protect what is in. 🤍

So don’t be afraid to protect your online energy this season and enjoy some much needed peace and joy in your digital space.

Happy weekend friends!

I don’t know about you but the holidays always fly by at our home.

That is why I find it crucial to stay present and eliminate distractions this time of year.

Clearing out the digital noise is a great way to prepare for a vacation, or get ready to host visitors in your space.

Just like you pick up the physical clutter, clearing out your online presence can free up mental space and make room for what is important.

Even if you can’t do a complete digital declutter right now, think about setting social media hours (times when you will check your socials) and muting or unfollowing accounts that no longer bring joy. Turning off or customising your social media notifications is also a great way to focus on those last work tasks before the year ends.

Have you done a digital declutter before?

One of the reasons I fell in love with the KonMari Method is because it promotes a simpler, intentional and sustainable lifestyle.

And even though the holidays is a time for giving and receiving, I like to think of ways to make my holiday habits sustainable too!

Each year Americans alone use 4.6 million pounds of wrapping paper!! And that can't be good for our environment.

Instead of wrapping your gifts in wrapping paper, why not use produce bags or brown paper bags (the inside of a Checkers Sixty60 bag works great) or get creative by using cloth or mason jars for your Christmas spoils.

Do you have any other funky wrapping ideas? Let me know in the comments.

We are all taught the importance of recyling our plastics but how many of us actually know how?

Plastic products have POLYMER codes, numbered 1 - 7.

Codes 1, 2 and 4 are commonly recycles across South Africa.

Codes 3, 5, 6 and 7 can be recycled but are not easily recycled in South Africa because of few suitable recycling facilities.

There is only one thing more stressful than moving...

Moving during the holidays!

Just like dealing with sentimal items, moving can be frustrating for the whole family.

And as someone who has completed multiple cross continent moves - and one of those times being during a pandemic - I highly recommend decluttering pre-move.

However, this is not always possible due to time constraints and other variables.

In this case I suggest that you pack up your belongings using the five KonMari categories.

Clothes
Books
Papers
Komono
Sentimental Items

This way you can declutter as you unpack your belongings in your new space with all like items grouped together.

Have you ever moved during the holidays? I'd love to know your experience.

Okay, so maybe your kitchen or makeup drawer aren't keeping you up at night.

Instead, perhaps it is those momentos and keepsakes that you just can't wrap your mind around.

The holidays tend to bring all sorts of emotions.

Perhaps you are reflecting on the year you have had or relationships that have been lost along the way.

gives us this beautiful advice to honour the past by setting it free.

Letting go of sentimental items is not just about saying goodbye to the past, it's about saying hello to the future.

So why not start today! I am sharing a helpful article in my stories to get you started.

A 2015 survey of 4,000 women found that the average woman owns a whopping 40 makeup products!

On average, women typically only use five of those 40 products, meaning we allow 87% of our collection to go to waste without regular use!

If this statistic gives you pause, think of all those lipsticks, mascaras, eyeliners, nail polishes, blushes, and powders sitting in your makeup case ... each of those adds up.

Once you have decluttered your makeup drawer or makeup bag make sure to create a home for your makeup that will inspire you to use your products more regularly.

Here are some ideas:

Keep a lipstick handy in your favourite bag and/or in your vehicle for those busy mornings.

Use old containers to store your products where you can see them instead of squashing them in a bag.

Pick a few products you'd like to experiment with each week and leave them on a beautiful tray on your night stand or bathroom vanity for easy access.

How much makeup do you have? Let me know in the comments.

There is nothing a bit of blush can't fix.

But just like some of the items in our kitchen, makeup products expire.

You can find the expiry date on the back of every product. There is a tiny symbol that looks like a can with its lid popped open. On it, you’ll see a number indicating how many months (6M or 12M or 24M, etc). This means that the product should be discarded 6M, 12M or 24 M after it was first opened.

Old makeup, especially liquid products, can harbour germs, which is really bad for your skin!

Let me know if you knew that makeup products expire?
