Our Story
I love Rusks! Always have... A few years ago while visiting the Garden Route in the Western Cape, I stumbled upon a recipe for delicious rusks in Wittedrift, a small town a few kilometres outside Plettenberg Bay. Legend has it that the recipe originated from a mathematics teacher at the Wittedrift High School, where my sister is also a mathematics teacher. Like most South Africans, I love rusks with my coffee, and even without it! I tried the recipe and was very impressed. The Wittedrift Health Rusks are high in fibre with a texture perfect for dunking in coffee. During the last few years I made minor changes to the recipe, and added different varieties. On 28 March 2017 the first Wittedrift Rusks went on sale in Grahamstown. The basic ingredients are: Wheat flour, Sugar, Wheat Bran, Sunflower seeds, Amasi, Margarine, Raising agents, Salt, Vanilla, and Lemon Juice. Wittedrift Rusks are produced in Grahamstown, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The Wittedrift Health Rusks are available in these varieties: • Wittedrift Original • Wittedrift Multi-Seed – with added Poppy and Sesame seeds • Wittedrift Pecan Nuts – same as Multi-Seed with added Pecan Nuts • Wittedrift Lean – 33% less sugar • Wittedrift Buttermilk – Plain Buttermilk Rusks - no seeds, nuts, or added fiber • Wittedrift Muesli – Plain Buttermilk Rusks with Muesli added
