A gesture of gratitude and appreciation brought De Rust residents together at Herries Bistro and Bar on Saturday, 10 October, as Marius and Rina Alberts thanked them for their continued support.
The annual appreciation gathering was held for the second consecutive year, following the Optimum Meiringspoort 21.1 km and 12.5 km race, which took place on an alternative route along the Uniondale road this year due to flood damage.
The occasion carried particular significance amid difficult economic conditions and the devastating floods of May and June, which washed away major sections of the road through Meiringspoort. The damage and closure of this vital route placed further pressure on the town and its businesses.
Against this backdrop, Marius and Rina’s message was simple but meaningful: every resident’s support matters. By supporting local businesses, the community helps sustain jobs, livelihoods and the distinctive character of De Rust.
Councillor Johan Allers, the VF Plus leader in Oudtshoorn, mayoral candidate and candidate for Ward 11, De Rust, joined the gathering with his wife, Ilse.
“De Rust’s greatest strength lies in its people. When residents and local businesses support one another through difficult times, they build the town’s future together. Marius and Rina’s gesture reminds us that appreciation and care make a community stronger.
"The second edition of this initiative marks a welcome step towards establishing an annual tradition that recognises De Rust’s people and their contribution to the town," Allers said.
