Dear friend, fellow , and customer, it is with a heavy heart that I have to let you know that our little bakery is shutting its doors. 😔

Our last day of business is TODAY, FRIDAY 17 MARCH 2023. After which we will no longer be offering any Spelt products, both to individuals, as well as to wholesalers.

I deeply regret that I was not able to communicate this to you sooner 😢.

I fought tooth and nail until the very last minute to keep producing the high-quality Spelt products you love, but sadly I wasn't able to. My heart actually hurts when I think about disappointing YOU, our loyal customers, because I know how hard it can be to find healthy, authentic, and wholesome products. I really am deeply sorry 😔.

The decision to close was not easy, but because of insurmountable, and ongoing, logistical, financial, and operational challenges, I have no choice at this time.

I would like to thank you for your loyal support over the years. I am thankful to everyone who got involved to help build this business. Many people donated their time, resources, and energy to help me. For this, I will be forever thankful. 🙏

Freddie's could not have touched the lives it has, and made such a big impact without your support and loyalty!

I am especially grateful to my two employees, Lovemore and Ashley, who gave their *ALL* to serve and love you through our products.

Owning a business is a tough journey to be on, and I salute every small South African business! You are our economy's real heroes, and I am rooting for you!! 🙌

I am sad that my flame has gone out, for now, but I have faith that in another season God might use me in this space again.🙏🏽

*We will be closing down all accounts regarding receipts and payments within the next 30 days.* We will contact each account holder owing to their payment schedule. If you had made payment for delivery next week, please send me a message so that I may refund your purchase.*

Please feel free to contact me in case of any doubts or questions.

God bless you until we meet again.

Freddie. 🌾

So , it’s that time of year again- the most wonderful, stressful, unhealthy, busy time of the year. 😅 I don’t know about you but 2022 has been a rollercoaster, and I’m ready to get off and feel solid ground beneath me!

❗️Tuesday 21 December will be our last day of delivering your favourite Spelt staples to your nearest pickup point.❗️ We will reopen order lines in the first week of January 2023 and start delivering on 10 January 2023 again. Please make sure to plan for this and order a few extras this week.

Just a few tips and reminders:

🌾 All our bread, pizza bases AND scones freeze incredibly well. Like really.
Make sure you grab a couple of extras to keep in the freezer so you have something nutritious, filling and quick to grab during the holiday season.

🌾We have been getting incredible feedback on our Spelt Chocolate muffin mix. This cutie can be a muffin that identifies as a cupcake with the simple addition of chocolate chips and/or icing. 🤪

When holiday boredom sets in, this is also a great activity to do with the kids (or get granny to do with them😋). Because this mix is made with whole flour Spelt, and coconut blossom sugar it will keep little (and big) tummies fuller for longer, and keep blood sugar stable.

Thank you so much for your love, patience and support this year. I really don’t take it for granted. 🤗

Feeling stuck, trapped, or unable to move forward with your health journey? You are not alone! So often I have customers tell me that they feel this way. And to be completely honest, I've felt this way before as well.

You're only human, and there are times when your particular health challenge might seem like the hardest thing ever, ESPECIALLY if it is the kind that is not clearly visible from the outside. 😒

Thankfully, there are ways to shake off that feeling and get you back on track moving forward in hope, with grace. Here are three of my top suggestions:

1. You don't have to do everything right! Every good
decision (no matter how small or big) has a good
consequence. Focus on what you've done right and not what where you are still struggling. We get more of what we focus on. So focus on progress, healing and small wins.

2. Complex health challenges WILL take time to resolve, the sooner you can accept that, the better you can manage expectations, motivation, and momentum,

3. Support is Super! Use it! Having a support structure around you - faith, good friends, and family can pull you through the hardest of seasons.

You've got this.

PS: I am a praying man, so if you'd like, it would be my honour to pray for you as you navigate your healthy journey. Simply comment on this post with a "yes please" or shoot me a DM and I promise I will pray for you. You don't have to give any details, just put your hand up. 🙌

Music to my ears! A WhatsApp from one of our customers: "... just btw, your bread and rusks are tasting even better since you moved... not sure why, but YUM!"

Honestly, there's no sweeter sound. We have baked from three different locations in the last six months,😱 and with each move, we experienced our fair share of logistical and practical challenges, which in turn caused some of our customers to receive products/services that were not up to our usual standard of excellence😔.

So thank you for your encouraging words Heather D***s. Now that we are settled and things are stabilizing it makes it that much sweeter to get this kind of feedback 🥰

A successful business owner is not immune to failure, or burnout. I'd argue that many successful business owners have faced their fair share of both but just kept on going 💫

I REALLY love baking our ancient grain products in an ancient way- the way that won't irritate your gut, or fill you up on empty carbs that go straight to your waist. I am so encouraged by the many IBS sufferers, diabetics, and fed-up, frustrated clients who write me, telling me what a huge difference our products have made not only to their health but also to their overall joy and well-being!🥰

But as much as I love serving you, the business side of Freddie's has not been an easy journey, and like many small businesses, we are fighting to keep our doors open. 🙈

Today I wanted to share some of my own challenges from the past year and the lessons I've learned:

LOADSHEDDING. 😱 Eskom + the time-sensitive nature of the sourdough process = Eish!

I am naïve by nature and believe everyone to be innocent until proven guilty. In business, however, this is not helpful. Expect the worst, and build contingencies for these events.

Having a profitable business it’s not so much time-dependent, as it is dependent on how hard and smart you work.

Relationships are key. Your most valuable asset is your relationships. You never know when you will meet someone that will be your next employee, your next investor, your next mentor, your next big business provider, your next friend… Invest in people where you can, and you will have more security than money can provide.

All that to say, I appreciate EVERY ONE of you and your support, patience, and purchases. Every order really, really matters, and I appreciate your loyalty to our little bakery more than I can say. Stick with us, we are doing our best for you, and the best is yet to come!!

How often do you tell yourself 'I'll do it tomorrow, or Charlotte's personal favourite, "I'll start on Monday" and then tomorrow or Monday comes and you still don't take action. 😆🤦

Absolutely NO judgment. I get it. Life is tough and busy, and often it's those habitual comforts we rely on to get us through. But just getting through is not the same as LIVING.

The secret to getting ahead, and seeing success is to just get started! All you need to do is start small, RIGHT NOW.

Don't wait for Monday, or payday to overhaul your entire grocery cupboard, just to become overwhelmed and end up having to throw half a fridge worth of fresh produce away because the person you were when shopping seems to not even know the person standing in front of the fridge at 7 pm. 😄

Make ONE swop (our 50% Spelt sourdough loaves are a great place to start) Drink ONE extra glass of water. Park a little bit further from the shop to get a few extra steps in. Small consistent changes over time will get you where you want to go. I believe in you! 🌾

New around here? Welcome to our community, a place where I help you understand the sciency stuff that drives your gut health and then get real practical about resources to help you ditch the bloating (ad other symptoms!) while keeping the bread! 🙌

I’m Freddie, a nuclear engineer turned sourdough baker, and I have been at this for about a decade now. 🤯

I was inspired to start my own business because Charlotte, my wife, couldn’t eat bread for years. Think leaky gut, gluten intolerance, and type 1 diabetes. This was making her sad because everyone knows that . 😆

So I bought a stone mill and pure Spelt from Europe and found a way to ditch the cramps, bloating, and fatigue, but keep the bread, and as it turns out, pizza, rusks, and scones too! Now we're sharing our long-fermented whole flour sourdough products so that you too can enjoy the good stuff again!

I've never been happier that I did this because not only did I help my wife and kiddies, but now I get to connect with people like you too, I'm so glad you're here! 🌾

What brought you to my page? Let me know below.

LEAP(S) OF FAITH 👉👉 Today is not only the first day of Spring but it is also the beginning of a new season for me and my family.

Tomorrow we are leaving the city behind and moving to Sedgefield.

"What about Freddie's? Are you closing up shop?😱", you ask. Don't worry ! Read to the end to see what we're planning!

God has been wooing our hearts for the last four years, gently (and, at times, not so gently 😅) setting our feet on a path of healing, health, and restoration in ALL areas of life.

You know how passionate I am about health, but I am even more passionate about my faith, and relationships with people. This move will enable us to live a more healthy and balanced life. And even though it comes with some sacrifices, we have peace knowing that we are exactly where, and with who, we are meant to be. 😇

Now, our awesome customer happiness engineer, Ashley, has been baking with me for a looooong time. He knows our products inside and out, and he will continue to produce the high-quality Freddie's products you have become used to. I will still make the trip to Cape Town twice a month, so you're not quite rid of me 😜.

🥳Ready for some MORE GOOD NEWS?🥳

From 17 September you can get Freddie's rusks, muffin pre-mix, scones, pizza bases, and oats at an INCREDIBLE spot just between Wilderness and Sedgefield, called Heritage Bakery! There are Alpacas, games for the kids, great coffee and eats- all in a peaceful forest setting. Oh, and you're likely to bump into me too 😇.

Thank you ALL for your continued support. I am so grateful to be on this journey with you. 🌾

Love and appreciate all of you 💜🌾

FACT: 80% of your serotonin (a.k.a. the happiness hormone, which is crucial in regulating mood) is produced in your gut. 🤯

Scientists actually talk about the gut as our 'second brain', because it houses a respectable amount of neuron connections that influences our emotions in some pretty major ways!

Want to feel happier? Then keep that digestive factory happy and running well-oiled! To do that our bodies need a lot of fibre, water, and all the right nutrients to manufacture these neurotransmitters.

All of these gut-healthy, happiness producing nutrients and fibres are found in real, organic, WHOLE foods. An easy way that helps me when choosing between all the many food options is to remind myself of this rule of thumb when shopping:

Processed = Problems.

"But isn't the bread and pizza bases you bake also processed?"

Yes. But not in the modern sense. The difference is that because we bake with Spelt, an ancient grain, using pretty ancient (well, atleast not modern 😂) methods, like stone milling the WHOLE Spelt kernal directly into the mixing bowl, fresh for each batch, ALL it's fibre, and nutrients gets ingested by you. The sourdough process also helps a TON with digesting 🤗🤗

You get to have your seritonin and eat it too 💃🏻🌾🌾

Rediscover the Goodness of Grain

I’m Freddie Bieldt, founder, owner and baker of bread here at Bread of Life Bakery. Bread should not be 'tolerated' by our bodies, but rather be nourishing it! After a decade of research and experimentation, I’ve re-discovered the way to bake great tasting, nourishing sourdough bread, that is even tolerated very well by several of my gluten-intolerant clients. I use organic wheat that is stone-milled on the premises for every home-baked small batch.

In 2011 my fiancé, now wife, was diagnosed with type 1 Diabetes at the age of 24. Growing up on a steady diet of “rys, vleis en aartappels” (that’s “rice, meat, and potatoes”) we found ourselves having to suddenly find alternatives to our staple foods, in particular bread and bread products. Our search for alternative carbohydrates, that didn’t taste like cardboard or cost a small fortune, catapulted me into a never-ending health-search.

There is so much information out there that it takes serious commitment to distinguish fact from fiction. Luckily, I hold a master’s degree in Nuclear Engineering so doing research, finding answers, and fixing things are in my DNA!

After a decade of study, I have found one truth to remain steadfast through all the fads. Bread is not the enemy to sugar control, gut health, and weight management. But rather the commercial manufacturing process and the very flour itself is where things go wrong.
