Yesterday, 17 August, we remembered and celebrated the birthday of one of the most influential figures in the history of the South African Chefs Association – Dr Billy Gallagher

Billy was far more than a celebrated chef. He was a visionary leader, mentor, teacher and tireless champion of the culinary profession who devoted much of his life to creating opportunities for others.

For more than two decades, he led SA Chefs, helping to build the Association and raise the standing of South African chefs both at home and internationally. As President of Worldchefs, his influence extended across borders, connecting chefs and culinary associations around the world and ensuring that South Africa had a respected voice on the global culinary stage.

But for those who knew Billy, his legacy was never simply about positions or accolades. It was about people.

He believed in young chefs. He believed in education and mentorship. He believed in the extraordinary things that could happen when chefs came together. And he believed that the culinary profession could be a powerful force for good – something perhaps nowhere more evident than in initiatives such as the World Chefs Tour Against Hunger.

The generations of chefs he encouraged, mentored and inspired remain his greatest legacy.

On what would have been Billy’s 78th birthday, we remember him with enormous gratitude and affection, and celebrate a life that helped shape SA Chefs and South African culinary history.
