Gettysburg Homestead

Gettysburg Homestead I'm an over the hill, introverted, anxiety ridden, keeping it real kind of person. I have everyday struggles and won't pretend I don't. I'm Mary, the driver.
(1)

So buckle up and welcome to the struggle bus. I'm closing in on a half a century years old mama to 2 adult children. One who is on the autism spectrum and still lives with me. We live very close to largest Amish community in Ohio and love the peace and quiet. I love creating with fabric, wool, paper mache, and whatever else I have hidden around my home. I'm not a great cook or baker BUT I do love

trying new recipes even though my daughter has quite a few food aversions. She is also trying new recipes to make on her own as well. Please join me as I navigate life trying to take care of my aging parents, work, helping my daughter, and enjoy the things that keep me sane in life.

Since it stopped raining finally I've been working outside. I mowed yesterday and had to rake it all today because it got so long. I will probably mow again tomorrow or Saturday just to keep caught up. So no sewing or painting.

I haven't been able to get my raised garden in yet because of the rain, but I still have some things growing. I bought this lupine last year and it didn't really do much. I figured it would die over the winter. But it is so beautiful. ❤️ My pot potatoes are growing well. If nothing else we'll have potatoes to eat for a week or two this fall/winter. The lettuce and spinach look awful. My honey bought some really horrible potting soil for me to use in the boxes. It shows! Oh well. I tried. Lesson learned.

I've been thinking about frame color for my quilt blocks. I like black, but I think I want something else. I almost always use black frames, but since I repainted my walls I want something with a color. Maybe a chippy green or tan. Hopefully this weekend I will have time.

#3 quilt block pieced. To add to the collection. I wonder if I can find anymore discounted frames at DG.

Well, I had a great idea until I didn't. 😂 At some point I had a stencil about old quilts. Wouldn't you know this is the only part of it I can find. It was something like this sign I found on Etsy to give you an idea.

Anyway, use your imagination here. Have a sign that says Old Quilts or something like that and then hang the framed quilt blocks below it or around it instead of an actual quilt. Picture a wall with family pictures arranged around one central picture. You could do as many or as few as you want. You wouldn't have a window like my original post the other day, which on my wall would be to bulky and heavy. BUT I still love that idea. In case you missed that picture I will post it again.

Imagine those blocks in individual frames around a sign... ❤️

I pieced #2 quilt block. Now to decide which one I want to do for block #3. I actually had a cute idea on how to display them not using a window so stay tuned. I need to get ready for work. 😩

I no longer have Memorial Day as a recognized holiday at work. If I want off I have to request off, so I did. My job relies on the post office and bank, which are both closed, so what would I do all day?

I figured since it's a vacation day I wasn't going to stay home and clean. What fun is that when the sun is finally out? So, my honey met me at the local Ollie's. We took our time and looked around. We love that store! Then there is a supermarket, Marc's, next door that has food and other stuff. You never know what you'll find at a discount.

I decided to spend some money on my porch since I cleaned it off. I bought the wind chime for $14.99. The black and white 5x7 rug for $7.99 and the Welcome mat for $10.99. I'm still on the search for a table for in between the chairs. I think a wrought iron one would be perfect.

Anyway, I still need to decide what to put on the windy end of the porch that can take rain and snow. I saw a really good idea of using lattice to block some wind but then I couldn't see my flower beds at that end. I guess I just need to let it evolve. I'll find the right pieces.

After the window quilt post yesterday (if you didn't see it you need to) I got inspired. I bought this frame and two others on the discount shelf at DG for $3 each a month or so ago. Yes, the middle is canvas and originally I was going to paint them until this inspiration hit. 😊 I do have some old windows I could use, but I decided these 3 frames would be perfect and easier to find a spot for. And of course, to make sure I could do it and make it look like I envisioned. The block ended up being 5.5" X 7.5" to fit the frame.

I pulled these pants from the "when I lose weight" pile today! These are wind breaker pants with no give other than half the waist band.

I am officially lower than when I stopped WW years ago. Yes, I gained that weight back and just lost it again plus a smidge more as of today since February 13th. 😊 This time I'm just counting calories and exercising 20 minutes a day.

My honey brought this to me from his cousin's parents house. His cousin's parents passed in a relatively short period of time and his Dad liked stuff. So his cousin has the task of cleaning it out. Anyway, my honey knows I love folk art stuff so when his cousin asked if he wanted he said yes. It's only maybe 20 years old, but it is so quirky it's cool. Literally just a carved twig but done by someone with talent.

Yesterday our facility manager walked through my office. I was making small talk and said "where have you been? I haven't seen you in awhile?" I know he's been busy buying a house since he relocated to our area. We have been building new barns and getting new growers for our business. We will be breaking ground next week for a huge expansion so he's been busy. His reply was "I've been everywhere." Knowing he is a music fan I had to finish his sentence with "man". He stopped in his tracks and was instantly like Johnny Cash. So, today he wears a black sweatshirt to work. I didn't realize it until our daily 4pm meeting where he said he wore it for my benefit. I looked at him odd at first and he said "the man in black." I instantly knew what he was talking about and started laughing. Everyone else just looked at us. I was like inside joke.

It has been a bit tense at work and boy am I glad I can sit in my office and watch it all go down. The finance department doesn't get blamed for stuff. It is so awesome. 😂 My office mate and I decided we weren't going to sign an agreement to use our pictures for anything company related. She was like who cares if they feed us pizza and want to take pictures for PR. We'll order our own pizza and shut our door so we don't have to. 😂😂😂 introverts unite in our office.

It's raining so I had to work inside. I finally cleaned up my scraps from my quilt and started thinking about the border. I can't even believe I'm thinking about this, BUT I'm thinking about using my flag fabric. However, I think it is polyester. I bought this at Zinck's years and years ago. I believe it is actually what the little flags on the wood sticks are made from. It has that drape and feel.

Pros:
The colors are more muted and dark to match my quilt as compared to the red and white striped fabric for raggedy Ann dolls which is the alternative. No, I don't want to dye the bright fabric.

It looks more authentic.

Cons:
It's actually flag fabric and polyester. The rest is cotton.

Not sure it will wash up nice a wrinkly after I quilt it.

It looks to "new" to match a vintage quilt.

Hmmm... maybe I need to look for other options. What I have in my stash isn't quite what I'm looking for. I don't want bright white or red. I need more muted "primitive" red white and blue.
