Stemma Bakery​ was a family-owned Greek bakery that started in 1920. It was founded by Socrates Avvram. Through the years, the bakery was handed down from one son to another. Before Stemma Bakery closed in the late 1990's, the grandson of Socrates Avvram, Nick Kotsonas and his wife, took over Stemma. Once the bakery was forc

ed to close its doors, due to the construction of Greektown Casino in downtown Detroit, their was no real chance of re-opening Stemma to the public again. Fast forward to 2018 and the daughter of Nick Kotsonas, Socrates Avvram's great granddaughter, Michelle Wessel, decided she didn't want to let her dream go of one day being the owner of Stemma Bakery. She got to witness the business of the bakery as a little girl growing up and fell in love with baking! Stemma has always been sentimental to her. When she finally had a chance to recapture those unforgettable moments at her family's bakery, she took the opportunity to reclaim the Stemma name and started her own small, home-based bakery using the Stemma name. She is currently still learning the ways of the old Stemma from her parents and at this time is proudly serving cupcakes and cookies. The menu will grow as Stemma grows, again...

The chance to bring back old family recipes is very exciting and will be a chance to make her dream come true!

Thank you so very much to all who have supported me and helped me grow over 4 years! It was absolutely amazing to create a tasty treat for all of you!

Unfortunately, due to the increase in cost for product and packaging as well as shortages, I would have to increase the cost of my treats across the board. Which is something I've tried to hold off doing...

Also with my 3 boys now having after school activities again (I cannot wait to watch them burn that energy!!), my time is even more limited for baking.

So the two combined limitations have made it very clear that it's going to be incredibly tough to continue Stemma.

As heartbreaking as this post is to write, it must be written.

May 31st, 2022 will be the last day for Stemma, until maybe one day, I will pick up my rolling pins and turn on my mixer again.
