The Story Behind Castro’s Bakery
The Journey of Guadalupe Castro — A Story of Courage, Sacrifice, and the American Dream
In 1984, Guadalupe Castro left her homeland of El Salvador with a heart full of hope and a dream of building a better future for her family. As a single mother who had tragically lost the father of her sons, she faced the heartbreaking decision to leave her children behind while she searched for opportunities in the United States.
Arriving in Northern Virginia, she settled in the Culmore apartments in Falls Church. Life was far from easy. She worked three jobs, slept very little, and faced years of uncertainty over her immigration status. Yet, through faith, perseverance, and countless sacrifices, she never gave up. She eventually reunited with her sons and other family members, and in 1992, she proudly received her permanent residency.
In 1985, a dream began in a small apartment kitchen. Despite her exhausting work schedule, Guadalupe discovered a passion for baking. She began making her signature fruit cakes, filled with fresh strawberries, peaches, and French cream. What started as a simple hobby soon became a favorite among family, friends, and the community.
By 1988, she had moved into a townhouse, and demand for her delicious cakes continued to grow. In 1992, she moved into a larger home, where her family helped her bake and decorate cakes while the living room became a gathering place for customers picking up their orders.
As her popularity grew, so did the challenges. Complaints from neighbors about traffic and customers eventually pushed Guadalupe to take an even bigger step.
In 1997, Castro’s Bakery, Inc. was born.
Guadalupe opened her first storefront at 5515 Wilson Boulevard in Arlington, Virginia. Alongside her husband, José Manuel Castro, she introduced traditional Salvadoran breads and pastries, including conchas, semitas, salporas, and cachitos de ajonjolí, bringing a taste of home to the growing Central American community.
That same year, responding to her customers’ requests, she created her own version of the beloved tres leches cake, a delicious tradition that would become part of Castro’s Bakery’s identity.
Her journey continued with the Seven Corners location in 2003 and the expansion to Woodbridge in November 2014, carrying her passion and family traditions to even more communities.
From a small apartment kitchen to a beloved family bakery, Ms. Castro’s story is about much more than cakes and bread.
It is the story of a brave, strong, selfless, dedicated, and determined woman who turned unimaginable hardships into opportunities. Through hard work, faith, and love for her family, she built something that would touch generations of families.
Today, every cake baked and every loaf of bread shared carries a piece of her journey.
