"I don't need to take your class, because I'm no longer required to have a permit to buy a firearm or carry one in Iowa."
You are correct, you don't. Iowa is now one of 26 states that have constitutional carry. That means a citizen is no longer required to have a permit to purchase or a permit to carry a firearm, as long as they're adhering to the local laws. But you may fall into a trap without realizing it.
There is something most people don't know. Even within the confines of the law under constitutional carry, if you're carrying your firearm within 1000 feet of a school, even if you're just driving by, you are in danger of felony charges, time in prison and no more 2A status. Check your state's local listings, but there are exceptions to this law, the main one of which, is a valid CCW Permit.
1. If you're on private property or a licensed CCW permit holder
2. In use for a program approved by the school
3. Approved by contract with the school
4. Law enforcement officer acting within official capacity
5. Unloaded and traversing school grounds for purpose of gaining access to public or private hunting lands and is authorized by school authorities.
I would hope common sense would prevail in most jurisdictions if you're stopped and in possession of your legally owned firearm. But in today's climate, I wouldn't personally be willing to take that chance.
Maybe consider registering for the upcoming Iowa CCW Permit class March 26, 2024 from 9:00 am to noon at the Wilton Outdoor Show.
