October 19, 2026 β€” Remembering Red Monday and October’s Historic Stock Market Crashes
-
October 19, 2026, marks 39 years since October 19, 1987, when the Dow plunged 508 pointsβ€”22.6% in one trading session.
-
Historically called β€œBlack Monday,” this post uses β€œRed Monday.” Why attach another negative meaning to Black when, in financial terms, β€œin the red” means losing money and β€œin the black” means making it?
-
October has seen several historic crashes and selloffs:
-
πŸ”΄ October 24, 1929 β€” Panic selling on β€œ RedThursday” helped usher in the 1929 crash.
-
πŸ”΄ October 28–29, 1929 β€” The Dow fell nearly 13%, then nearly 12% the following day.
-
πŸ”΄ October 19, 1987 β€” The Dow plunged 22.6%.
-
πŸ”΄ October 13, 1989 β€” The β€œFriday the 13th” mini-crash: down 6.91%.
-
πŸ”΄ October 27, 1997 β€” Asian financial crisis selloff: down 7.18%.
-
πŸ”΄ October 9 and 15, 2008 β€” Financial crisis declines of 7.33% and 7.87%.
-
But what happened whenever October 19 fell on a Monday?
-
πŸ”΄ 1987: βˆ’508.00 points | βˆ’22.6
-
🟒 1992: +14.04 points | +0.44%
-
🟒 1998: +49.69 points | +0.59%
-
🟒 2009: +96.28 points | +0.96%
-
🟒 2015: +14.57 points | +0.08%
-
πŸ”΄ 2020: βˆ’410.89 points | βˆ’1.44%
-
After 1987, the Dow rose on FOUR of the FIVE matching Mondays.
-
The green days occurred under Republican George H. W. Bush in 1992 and Democrats Bill Clinton in 1998 and Barack Obama in 2009 and 2015. The only decline came in 2020, under Republican Donald Trump. That’s historical contextβ€”not proof that a president’s party determined the outcome.
-
Now October 19 falls on a Monday again. October’s reputation may stir concern, but the calendar alone cannot predict the market.

-
What do you think: Will Monday, October 19, 2026, finish GREEN or RED?

Kenneth Wayne Bailey
April 15, 1944- October 11, 2026
Obituary

-
Kenneth Wayne Bailey, 82, of Williamston, NC departed this earthly life bound for Heaven on Sunday, October 11, 2026. Born to GT and Mollie Mae Bailey, he spent most of his youth in the Bear Grass Community where he met the love of his life Marie Taylor whom he married on December 2, 1966. Kenneth and Marie had two daughters, Sherri and Pamela.

-
Kenneth took pride in being a "jack of all trades and master of none" - his words, not ours. He retired from Weyerhaeuser with 33 years of service. In his spare time, you could find Kenneth on the water fishing for the next big one or in his shop tinkering.

-
Kenneth's favorite times were spent with family and friends, whether it be hosting a fish fry, hanging with the morning crew at Bojangles, enjoying the cultural experience of one of his granddaughter's ballet programs (most of which he actually stayed awake), or watching his grandson play baseball. He also got the greatest joy taking his grandson (his buddy) fishing or teaching him carpentry skills which he knew would be passed on to his newest little buddy, his great grandson.

-
Time spent with his granddaughter (his princess) was priceless to him, whether it be making sure she got her Mickey Mouse shaped pancakes or her just sitting in his lap trying to convince her Papa to take her to Shamrock for breakfast.
-
He will be greatly missed by his wife Marie, daughters Sherri Bailey, Pamela (Michael) Cowin, grandson Zach (Lexi) Cowin, granddaughter Peyton Cowin, great-grandson Hudson Cowin (child of Zach & Lexi). He is also survived by his two sisters JoAnn Lee Honeycutt (Robert) and Elaine Leggett (Mitch) and his brother-in-law (and brother by heart) Phil Taylor.

-
Also left to cherish his memory are multiple nieces, nephews, and their families. Last but not least, he will be missed by his four-legged best friend Bandit (cat) whom he shared his recliner. He was proceeded in death by his parents and younger brother George Bailey and favorite uncle Bobby Ray Bailey.
-
Family would like to express gratitude for the many calls, prayers, and support extended during Kenneth's illness. Flowers are appreciated or donations to Community Christian Church, are welcomed - or honor his memory by taking a kid fishing.
-
Special acknowledgement to Liberty Home Health and Hospice for the compassionate care provided to Kenneth and his family.
-
A funeral service was held at 2:00 PM on Wednesday, October 14, 2026 at Community Christian Church with Dr. George Powell officiating and music provided by Tracey Lee.
-
Burial followed at Martin Memorial Gardens with the following serving as pallbearers: Robert Taylor, Keith Taylor, Gary Taylor Jr., Bobby Dougherty, Brandon Lee, and Justin Leggett; honorary pallbearers: Joby Griffin, Charles Mills, Nick Nicholson, Buck Davis and Paul Roberson.

πŸš‘ ECU Health Beaufort Hospital has donated $137,177.34 to Williamston Fire-Rescue-EMS to help purchase new emergency medical equipment for local first responders.
-
The funding will be used for an MTS Power-LOAD system, which helps safely load and unload ambulance stretchers, and a LIFEPAK 15 monitor/defibrillator, an important tool used by EMS crews to evaluate and treat patients during medical emergencies.
-
The presentation included ECU Health Beaufort Hospital President Dennis Campbell II, Williamston Fire-Rescue-EMS Chief Michael Peaks, Williamston Mayor Dean McCall, first responders and other community supporters.
-
The equipment comes at an important time for Martin County. Since the closure of Martin General Hospital in 2023, Williamston EMS crews have been traveling farther to transport patients for hospital care. According to Chief Peaks, the average ambulance transport time increased from approximately 5 minutes and 38 seconds to about 20 minutes.
-
The longer trips place additional demands on emergency personnel, making equipment that improves patient care and reduces the physical strain on EMS crews especially valuable.
ECU Health Beaufort provided the donation through hospital operational funds as part of its continued involvement in supporting healthcare access in Williamston and Martin County.
-
The investment represents another step toward strengthening the emergency-care network serving residents throughout the area. β€οΈπŸš‘
