I started Nan's Nummies at the Downtown Des Moines Farmers Market in 1988. After a couple of weeks there I just couldn't make cookies fast enough. So I started looking for a storefront and opened my store in Historic Valley Junction the following spring. I started with about 8 kinds of cookies and over the years have added about 8 more kinds of cookies, brownies and bars, Dutch Letters, candy and

fudge. I have moved to bigger locations in Valley Junction twice and also expanded my current store twice! We also carry loads of chocolates, truffles and bulk candy including Jelly Belly’s and salt water taffy.

🚗 Car Show Update! 🚗

We've been watching the weather closely, and while some rain is still in the forecast, most stations seem to agree that it should move out before show time.

As of right now, the car show is STILL ON! 🎉Come down the Valley Junctions farmers market, visit our custom cake cart and other amazing vendors along with the great restaurants in the Junction while checking out the awesome rides!
(I cant recommend The False 9 enough! Best french fries in the metro and awesome staff!)

We'll continue keeping an eye on things and will make a final decision tomorrow morning if needed, but we wanted everyone to know that we're moving forward as planned for now.

So dust off those classics, muscle cars, hot rods, lowriders, trucks and daily drivers. We are hopeful Mother Nature will cooperate and give us a beautiful evening in Valley Junction! 74 degrees is PERFECT!!!!

We'll post an update tomorrow morning if anything changes. Until then... we're planning on seeing everyone there!

One of my favorite things in the bakery isn't a cookie, pastry, or candy.

It's this wall.

Over the years, it's slowly filled up with drawings, thank you cards, and sweet notes from customers, especially the kiddos. And honestly... they're some of our favorite decorations in the whole bakery.

If you've ever wondered whether we save those things...

Yep. They are by our TV menu behind the register.

Every crayon masterpiece.
Every sweet note.
Every "thank you."
Every picture that somehow makes me look like I have giant yellow hair. 😂

They remind us why we do what we do.

I might as well share some good news! 😆
A fresh batch of Dutch Rolls just came out of the oven and I'll be bagging them up shortly. If you've been craving one, today is a very good day to stop by!

Pop these babies in your home microwave (or ask us if enjoying in store) for 10 seconds for the best treat you've had in awhile! All of the yummy goodness of a Dutch letter but you get a little bit of everything in each bite!

As many of you saw, things got pretty crazy over the last 24 hours. While the situation in our shop never should have happened, CajunFest leadership reached out to me today with a very sincere, professional apology and a real plan of action.

They are removing the committee members responsible, deleting the reviews, and supporting our bakery with a $1,000 cookie order for the festival.

We are ready to put this behind us and keep baking. Thank you all so much for your incredible love and support, you guys proved once again why our community is so special and you have truly wrapped our family-run shop in so much love and support.

Well... this escalated quickly.

We have officially gone viral, and I honestly don't know what to say.

The amount of love and support you all have shown us has been overwhelming in the best possible way. My employees mean the world to me, and seeing so many positive reviews and kind comments on Facebook and Google has been incredible.

To everyone who took the time to leave a review, share a post, send a message, or say something kind: thank you.

I promise I'll work my way through all of the comments and reviews, but right now I need to get my butt back in the kitchen because apparently a whole lot of you are planning to visit today. 😅

As a small, local business, we love supporting our community, but we will always prioritize the safety, comfort, and respect of our hard-working team above all else.

​Recently, a group came into the shop right at closing. They asked to hang a flyer for a local event (CajunFest). To keep our shop clean and fair to everyone, we have a strict, long-standing policy against hanging outside flyers. Our team member, Jordan, handled the request incredibly politely, offering to place it on the owner's desk for review. When they asked her to take a photo for a contest, she politely declined because she wasn't comfortable.
​Instead of respecting boundaries, a member of this group snatched the flyer back and stormed out. Moments later, a retaliatory, completely fabricated 1-star review hit our page on Yelp. To make it even more absurd, we got another review on Google calling us a "soda shoppe" or "shake shack." CajunFest replied by email saying they would connect me with the founder...who has the same name as the most recent review left, leaving us a clearly fake review. Through further emails with the video and audio proof of the encounter,, he admitted he did not hear a conflict but would listen when he can hear it better... the audio is pretty clear. No mistaking it.

​Anyone who knows us knows two things:
1. ​We don't sell sodas or shakes. We do things the old-fashioned way, scratch-baked with real ingredients and real love.
2. ​We are incredibly proud to be one of the most affordable bakeries around and have the most wonderful employees out there, and we refuse to let a dishonest review change who we are.

​We've watched and listened the security footage, and Jordan did absolutely everything right. We will never tolerate our team being bullied or review-bombed for standing their ground and being polite.

​I have dropped the proof in the comments for anyone who would like to judge for themselves how ridiculous this whole thing is. I can absolutely handle real, constructive reviews, but this is fake nonsense that causes real-world issues for a small business. It is not ok!

​To our amazing regulars: thank you for always seeing through the noise and supporting us for what we actually are, your local, scratch-made neighborhood bakery. 🫶

Farmers Market has officially been canceled due to weather, so we brought the cake cart inside!

We will be open normal time today 10-5:30 so come enjoy the cool dry air and customize your own Nummie cake! We can even do a Dot cake FRESH right in front of you!

🚨 CAR SHOW UPDATE 🚨

Please help us spread the word!

While Valley Junction has not officially canceled the Farmers Market at this time, the forecast is showing a significant threat of storms. If you've been around car shows for long, you know that usually means most of the cars stay tucked safely in the garage.

Rather than crossing our fingers and hoping for the best, we've decided to move the car show to NEXT THURSDAY, June 11.

The silver lining? We get to have car shows TWO WEEKS IN A ROW! 🚗🔥

If you know someone who was planning to attend but isn't on Facebook, please reach out and let them know about the date change. We don't want anyone showing up expecting a car show this week and finding an empty street instead.

Thank you all for understanding, and we'll see you next Thursday for what should be a much better night of cars, cookies, and good vibes!
