Our sincerest appreciation to County of Los Angeles @supervisorkathrynbarger and @lacountyparks for recognizing our work in partnership with Loma Alta Park and @ourspotlomaalta . Since our return post-pandemic, we've assisted in hosting events, provided fresh produce to the park from our farmers, and hosted numerous interactive cooking lessons for their after-school program. It is our joy to share the benefits of healthy eating and supporting our local food supply chain with our community.

These are some of the many ways that donations to the market have worked to serve a greater purpose. Thank you again to our community, for partnering with us in these efforts.

Shop our online store today (www.AFM-subscription.com) then visit us at the Mariposa Junction this Saturday from 5pm-9pm!

Over the past few years, we've been getting lots of request to host something more centralized on a day/night when more people can visit. Due to food disparities in West Altadena and many other logistics, we don't plan to move the market. So, this is our compromise and it should be tons of fun! Local vendors and food producers will join us on the 1st Saturday of every month (except August) from 5pm - 9pm. Our goal is to continue supporting our local producers, while also highlighting existing businesses at Mariposa Junction.

This week, enjoy live music, margaritas from MIjares and more! And, while you're there, PLEASE also visit our Mariposa Junction vendors, some of whom will remain open during the event!

See you on Saturday!

Repost from @thebudgetnista using repost_now_app - A #UnicornSquad roadmap to help you say “yes” or “no” to purchases.

Cost is one factor… but time and expected usage are also worth considering!

Ex.) Thinking about that super-deluxe fry/roast/dehydrate/bake combo gadget for $300?

Do the math on the time you believe it will save you weekly (vs. traditional oven cooking) and think about how long you think it will last you (3-4 years, for example).

Bonus consideration: Will it save you money in other areas? Less takeout, for example…

You may find out it’s worth it when you break the numbers down… or nope, not really a spend you need/want.

*NOTE: When doing the “math”, it’s important to be realistic when estimating the likely reality of usage. If you have a history of buying something… using it once or twice… and then on to the next thing… keep it real with yourself with those calculations.:)

SAVE/TAG/SHARE this as a purchase decision starting point.

Let us know in the comments if this helps.

I love this time of year, when the wild mustards are in bloom.

The wild mustard is an invasive, but totally edible species that covers many of our SoCal hills. The flowers, seeds and leaves make a wonderful addition all kinds of dishes. Older leaves are spicier than young leaves.

So, next time you’re out hiking, grab some that you’re pretty certain no animal or human animal has peed on and enjoy!

In case you didn’t know…

There’s a farmers market in Altadena!

Farmers markets are a direct response to social injustice as represented by food inequities in underserved communities. NW Altadena has been identified as one such community. People have asked me to move the market to busier, more “affluent” areas. That’s not gonna happen, at least not while I’m here.

Come to the ‘hood and grab some berries 🍓🫐

We accept EBT and match your EBT dollars up to $10, so there’s that, too. Student EBT cards, included.

Actually, there IS a basement at the Alamo (of course, I looked it up) but the cinnamon thing stands.

In continuation of our focus on #blackhistorymonth, today, please ask yourself: "How do I support inclusion in food access?" As with last week, we are offering a selection from the books listed below to three people both on IG and FB who contribute to this discussion. Thank you to @tamim1908 and @britesteele who will be gifted books from last week's discussion.

In highlighting the impact of Black America on foodways in this country, we're taking this moment to highlight @farmerkenofficial , Kenneth Sparks II, who we're happy to have as a member of our AFM family. You can find his produce in our online store, and in person at the market on Wednesdays!

I reached out to him last year, after hearing about him and @lacropswap through the @prosperity.market . One of our goals at the market has been to make farmers markets more accessible to everyone, including a more diverse and inclusive representation of vendors, so naturally, I was thrilled when he agreed to join us.

Historically, Black farmers have been excluded from or have migrated from farming over the past hundred years or so, due to land disenfranchisement, predatory sharecropping systems, the Industrial Revolution, greater access to education, discriminatory loan practices at the USDA, lack of capital, etc. Farmer Ken has chosen too continue the tradition of Black farming on his new farmland in Hemet (Cahuilla tribal land), after arduously working with/against the USDA for equitable land access.

Please support Farmer Ken, both at our market and wherever else you might see him. And, please take a moment this month to pick up one of these books by women authors on the history of Black farmers in the US:

"Farming While Black" from @soulfirefarm by @leahpenniman

"We Are Each Other's Harvest" by @nataliebaszile

"Freedom Farmers: Agricultural Resistance and the Black Freedom Movement" by Monica M. White

I often cook things I don’t actually eat… but… quality control and all. Plus, I truly believe that comfort, food in moderation, is a good thing; emphasizing “moderation”, especially if the ingredients comply with your modified diet. For this, I used rice pasta, sharp cheddar cheese, Parmesan cheese and lactose-free milk, ‘cause who wants 💨?

Gluten free loaded macaroni and cheese.

Same as you’d make any macaroni and cheese. I added smoked brisket, sweet onions and green onions. That way, it’s not a side any more. See?

As we stroll through Black History Month, I've been contemplating how to create meaningful dialogue surrounding Black culture. Of course, the closest thing to me is Black foodways. So, I ask this: How has Black food culture impacted you?

Our ancestors fed and kept alive those who founded this country and most of The Americas. Black culinary traditions, customs, and recipes permeate American food culture - they ARE American food culture.

Fortunately, there are many historians and storytellers who preserve and share the relevance of Black food history, including but not limited to The Cooking Gene Jessica B HarrisStephen Satterfield and Tonya Hopkins. This month, take some time to explore their work. I've added links to their websites in our Altadena Farmers' Market, Inc #linktree which you can access from our bio on IG, from the attached QR code or here: https://linktr.ee/AltadenaFarmersMarket

To encourage this, the @altadenafm is gifting publications on Black foodways to random friends of the market, and my personal friends, who contribute to our discussion on how Black food culture has impacted you, gifting three from FB comments and three from IG comments.

We'll continue this conversation as I post more regarding the cultural impact of Black folks on food culture in the Americas over the next few weeks, and when I cook up something lovely at the market on the 16th. Stay tuned!

Thank you for pushing me to do the work and spread the word.

So… there’s always a parable, right! LOL

Last night, I was distracted and focused on things that had NOTHING to do with my cookie project. My work was reflective of my lack of focus: struggly snowmen, half-ass snowflakes, uninspired trees - struggly, half-ass and uninspired is no place to be.

The first picture is struggly cookies; second picture is tonight’s cookies.

Then, I literally deleted the distraction and focused on what I really wanted to to do. I was more patient with the process. No anxiety.

Delete the things that hold you back from being a better version of yourself, y’all. We always have room for improvement, but today, I’m grateful for progress.
