Rainbow Donuts and Sing Yam
On Saturday March 1, 2025, a retirement celebration will take place at Rainbow Donuts 1432 S. Azusa Ave, West Covina, CA 91791 at 11:00 am
In 1987 Sing Yam and her husband Thom opened Rainbow Donuts in West Covina. Located in the South Hills Shopping Center on Azusa Ave and Aroma Drive, the Donut Shop quickly became a family favorite for nearby residents. The Yam family wanted their store to have a hometown feel and encouraged customers to place pictures on their walls. Today those pictures are called the wall of honor and a tribute to many who became part of the Rainbow family. Many regular customers over the years visited every day and Rainbow Donuts quickly became the CHEERS of West Covina. Today it continues to serve multigenerational families who first came to Rainbow as infants, then adults, parents, and grandparents.
Sing and her family are very humble people who came to the United States from Cambodia. They fled the Khmer Rouge in the late 1070's by walking from Cambodia to Thailand. The trek was dangerous as they could only walk at night through thick brush to hide from the Khmer. Sing’s father was killed by the Khmer. In Thailand their uncle sponsored them to the United States. Upon arrival in the United States Sing attended school and did whatever she could to help her family make money. Sewing clothes, recycling bottles and cans, and finally working in Thoms donut shop which led Sing to open Rainbow Donuts.
It's a story of the American Dream. There were many struggles along the way and Sing worked every day from 1987 to current in her shop. Her love for her customers continues today. So many people have told stories of her help, her kindness, and her love, it can only be quantified by the outpouring of support she received when the city encouraged a Dunkin Donuts to move in next to her. The loyal customers submitted a petition with over 5000 signatures opposing the Dunkin Donuts. A tribute to their love of Sing!
The donuts are special. They are made fresh every night and range from apple fritters to maple bars to frosted pink cake donuts. Her coffee is delicious and her smoothies are excellent. So many specialties from sandwiches to cinnamon rolls to croissants. Every customer has their favorites, and many will drive hours to come visit.
Sing will retire from Rainbow Donuts but continue on for a transitional period. Her love will then turn towards her family. A special grandchild will arrive shortly and there will be special times with her mom and sisters. Sing wants to work and if she finds the right opportunity, she will be back serving people, her life's devotion!!
