To our valued customers;
We recently received a notice of non-renewal of our insurance for the bakery side of our business from our insurance company.
For obvious reasons, without insurance we cannot risk customer access to the Colonial Village Bakery as there are many liability issues that this situation ultimately creates.
We think it is important that we are transparent with all of you that this has nothing to do with things we've done wrong or unsafe along the way.
According to our insurance company, we must have a UL300 fire suppression system installed in our bakery to bring it up to code and regain insurance coverage. Thru our research, we found that this code changed years ago (in the mid 90's)
The UL 300 code, which sets the standard for restaurant kitchen fire suppression systems, was introduced by Underwriters Laboratories on November 21, 1994.
This new standard was established due to changes in commercial cooking equipment and the increased use of vegetable oil as a cooking medium, which created new fire hazards.
We tried to get our older dry chemical system and exhaust hood certified for insurance, however, even if approved by underwriting we would still be considered high risk. We cannot afford $1350.00 a month for insurance as we were quoted! Yes, we checked with other companies too.
What this all means;
Effective immediately, we cannot use our donuts fryer and exhaust hood in the bakery, which means no donuts for the foreseeable future.
We are exploring options and if we figure out a temporary solution we will update you as information becomes available.
We will begin the process of pulling the necessary permits to allow us to begin removing the old system. The system must be removed and inspected by our insurance before they will reinstate any coverage for the bakery. In the coming days we will begin working thru a variety of plans to assess the best rate of return on our investment as we remodel the current bakery space.
We will try our best to keep some assortment of baked goods available at The Harvest Grill on a daily basis. Availability and variety will vary as we try to navigate these changes.
We will still have bread, cookies, pies, muffins and other baked goods, available thru advanced order and will do our best to accommodate your needs as best as we can.
We will still have the answering machine on at the bakery and will check it daily, however if you need to speak to one of us directly please call the restaurant at (989)343-5200 during business hours.
Please do not spread rumors, we are giving you first hand information as it becomes available.
Please don't start asking us 500 questions about everything, we're still trying to figure it out!
This is our livelihood, it's not just something we do, we spend more time here than at home, so please don't think we don't care!
We appreciate each and every one of you and the continued support you provide to all of our small town businesses!
Thank you
