Newsletter: January 6, 2026

As we begin the new year, Janet and I want to express our heartfelt gratitude for your unwavering, prayerful support and financial contributions. Your contributions were pivotal to our mission last year, enabling us to enroll 188 new students in the Freedom Academy Seminary Extension program in 2025.

We are excited to share that approximately half of these students have made professions of faith since starting their studies. This transformative journey not only equips them with Biblical knowledge but also fosters personal growth and spiritual development through studies in God’s Word. We are deeply encouraged by the impact this program is having on their lives and the communities and churches they will one day serve. Thank you for being a part of this vital work!

This year, our mission remains stronger than ever: to bring the light of God’s Word and hope to those currently incarcerated in darkness and their families. We are excited to share new initiatives planned for 2026, including expanded Bible study programs, mentorship opportunities, and reentry support for returning citizens. Your prayers and financial gifts make these efforts possible.
We invite you to stay connected by inviting Janet and me to one of your services. We would love to come and share what God is doing through Freedom Academy and Sanctified Hope Transitional Home for women.

As the year ended, Janet and I had the privilege of conducting Bible studies in the chapel and Christmas Eve and church services on a Princess Cruise purchased for us as a Christmas gift. As a result, some professed faith in Christ, including four men from China. One individual from China stated that he had never understood the meaning of Christmas or why Christians celebrate it until he heard the Gospel of Christ and learned why He came into the world. Praise God for His magnificent grace!

May this new year bring you peace, joy, and renewed purpose. Thank you for being a vital part of the New Birth Prison Ministries family.

Choices Have Consequences
A Lesson from Proverbs

“Because I have called, and ye refused; I have stretched out my hand, and no man regarded; But ye have set at nought all my counsel, and would none of my reproof: I also will laugh at your calamity; I will mock when your fear cometh; When your fear cometh as desolation, and your destruction cometh as a whirlwind; when distress and anguish cometh upon you.

Then shall they call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me: For that they hated knowledge, and did not choose the fear of the LORD: They would none of my counsel: they despised all my reproof. Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices,” Proverbs 1:25-31.

In our recent devotions, we’ve explored the profound wisdom found within the Book of Proverbs. It’s important to recognize that true knowledge and wisdom originate from our Father in Heaven, the One who knows us intimately and intricately. God not only desires what is best for our lives but is fully aware of what that entails. When we choose to ignore His guidance and counsel, He may allow us to follow our own paths, which can lead to undesirable outcomes. This concept is beautifully illustrated in the verse that states, “Therefore shall they eat of the fruit of their own way, and be filled with their own devices.” Here, we face a choice: we can either adhere to God’s way or pursue our own, but it’s crucial to understand that a harmonious alignment between our desires and His is necessary for true fulfillment.

Additionally, another significant principle highlighted in this passage is the law of sowing and reaping. When we refuse to heed God’s wisdom and guidance, we may find ourselves in trouble, and consequently, when we cry out to Him in times of fear and calamity, we may feel that He is distant, as God said, “They call upon me, but I will not answer; they shall seek me early, but they shall not find me.” This reflects a sobering truth: our relationship with God is reciprocal. If we turn our back on Him, we may not receive the assurance and support we long for during difficult times.

The God I serve embodies love, compassion, and mercy; however, even He has boundaries when it comes to those who continually reject Him. One consistent theme in the wisdom of Proverbs is that the fear—or profound respect—of the Lord is the foundation of all knowledge and wisdom. By honoring Him and acknowledging His authority, we position ourselves to receive His respect and guidance in return. In essence, this principle underscores the importance of cultivating a reverent relationship with God, which in turn can lead to a deeper understanding of His ways and plans for our lives.

The book of Proverbs is a rich collection of insights and wisdom that remains relevant today, just as it was 2900 years ago. Attributed largely to Solomon, who was inspired by God to write these timeless insights, each proverb offers practical guidance for living a wise and fulfilled life. Its teachings continue to resonate with readers, providing invaluable lessons that transcend generations and cultures.

Today, we read how to receive instruction from God. The Bible says, “How long, ye simple ones, will ye love simplicity? and the scorners delight in their scorning, and fools hate knowledge? Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you,” Proverbs 1:22-23.

In today's passage, the Bible addresses three types of people who reject knowledge from God’s Word. The first is referred to as the "simple," representing those who are ignorant or deprived of the understanding that God has to offer and who have no desire to learn. The second type is called a "scorner." A scorner appears to possess knowledge, but their understanding is counterfeit and manmade. Lastly, the passage speaks of fools who hate knowledge. In the Bible, a fool is someone who outright says “NO” to God, completely rejecting His counsel. Thus, we have the simple, who lack knowledge; the scorners, who hold synthetic knowledge; and the fools, who reject God from their lives.

Despite their ignorance and rejection, God still calls out to them, saying, “Turn you at my reproof: behold, I will pour out my spirit unto you, I will make known my words unto you.” This is a precious promise for us as believers in Christ. The only way to ever understand God’s Word is through the eyes of the Holy Spirit, because, “But the natural man (unsaved man) receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God” (1 Corinthians 2:14a). This is what Jesus meant when He said, “Except a man be born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God” (John 3:3b).

The verse suggests that true guidance from the Holy Spirit comes only when we submit ourselves to God's correction. This means that recognizing and accepting our shortcomings allows us to be open to the lessons the Holy Spirit imparts. When we allow God to redirect our paths and address our flaws, we create space for spiritual growth and understanding. Thus, our willingness to accept correction is essential for receiving the wisdom and teaching that the Holy Spirit offers us on our spiritual journey.

Throughout my life, I have observed people who are “unteachable” because they are either set in their ways, too clever for their own good, or simply stubborn. In His Word, God instructs us to remain “teachable” and to be open to His guidance. After all, He created us and knows what is best for us.

Greetings. My name is Douglas Siddle,

I graduated from Freedom Academy Seminary Extension. I just got out and I wanted to connect with Chaplain Chris Athey, over the past 4 years I have had the opportunity to learn and grow so much from him. He has been a good teacher and mentor to me. Through Freedom Academy Seminary God changed my life. I was able to focus in on God and develop a relationship with my Lord. Through the extensive studies of God's Word and weekly memory verses I have grown leaps and bounds through Freedom Academy Seminary. I praise God each and every day for the time I spent away from my family because I came out 180° changed man. I want to thank you deeply for the opportunity to study under Chris Athey and to develop a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. Without Freedom Academy Seminary I don't know where my life would be today. I am truly grateful and I am looking forward to what God is going to do in this next chapter. Every word in my Bible is true and I'm getting to see many of God's promises come true in my life. It is a gift to the men and women behind the razor wire to be blessed with men and women of God to show unconditional love and give them access to programs like Freedom Academy. I thank God for it and I pray that many other men and women are blessed as I have been blessed. I pray that Freedom Academy Seminary Extension will continue to reach inside the prison walls and raise up men and women of God. Thank you for your time in this matter and God bless you.

Upholding Integrity Amidst Temptation

Proverbs 1:10 & 15-19
10 My son, if sinners entice thee, consent thou not....
15 My son, walk not thou in the way with them; refrain thy foot from their path:
16 For their feet run to evil, and make haste to shed blood.
17 Surely in vain the net is spread in the sight of any bird.
18 And they lay wait for their own blood; they lurk privily for their own lives.
19 So are the ways of every one that is greedy of gain; which taketh away the life of the owners thereof.

As we continue our exploration of the wisdom in Proverbs, King Solomon addresses the danger of succumbing to peer pressure and following the crowd into wrongdoing. This is a sentiment I often encounter in my profession: “Everyone else is doing it, so why shouldn’t I?” However, it's crucial to understand that just because others may choose an unethical path does not justify our own decisions to do wrong.

As Christians, it is our responsibility to uphold our integrity and remain above reproach in all aspects of our lives. The truth is that God cannot and will not bless a life that is built on deceit and dishonesty. This principle applies to various scenarios, such as welfare fraud, where individuals exploit the system for personal gain; cheating on taxes, which undermines the very foundations of our society; stealing from one’s employer, which erodes trust in the workplace; and engaging in any other form of deceitful behavior.

The Bible warns us that God will not be mocked, emphasizing the law of sowing and reaping: whatever we choose to sow—be it good or evil—will eventually return to us in some form. Therefore, we must strive to resist the temptation to conform to unethical practices simply because they may offer immediate benefits. Instead, we should choose to live lives of honesty and integrity, trusting that our commitment to righteousness will ultimately lead to greater blessings in the long run.

What this really comes down to is the question: Do you want God's hand upon your life, or do you want to rely solely on your own resources and abilities? Personally, I would choose God's resources and abilities over my own any day of the week—and twice on Sunday!

God cannot bless a life that is rooted in deceit. It seems we live in a society that often overlooks the consequences of stealing and deceitfully acquiring money through fraudulent means. The Bible teaches that it’s never right to follow the crowd into wrongdoing, no matter how many others are doing it. Greed is a terrible thing; those who are driven by it effectively steal from others, including honest taxpayers, in their pursuit of wealth.

In conclusion, in a world where peer pressure and the allure of quick gains often lead individuals down a path of unethical behavior, the wisdom found in Proverbs serves as a vital reminder of the importance of integrity. King Solomon's teachings encourage us to resist the temptation to conform to wrongdoing, even when it seems that everyone else is doing it. As followers of Christ, we are called to uphold honesty and righteousness in all aspects of our lives, understanding that true blessings come from aligning our actions with God's principles.

Understanding Eternal Life: Assurance, Grace, and Salvation

Life’s most important question is: If you were to die today, do you know for sure that you would go to Heaven? The Bible provides clarity in 1 John 5:13, which states, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may KNOW that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”

God, through His Word, assures us that we can KNOW we have eternal life. You might wonder, “How can you be certain?” The answer is simple: it is all about Him and not about us.

If you are saved, it is due to grace and not by works. The Bible explains in Ephesians 2:8-9, “For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works, lest any man should boast.”

If you had to earn your way into Heaven, you would never know if you had done enough. You would constantly wonder if you are truly saved, hoping that one day you will make it to Heaven. However, if you are saved, you are saved by GRACE through FAITH.

Here is an explanation of why salvation must come through grace. Romans 3:23 states, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.” This verse highlights how God defines sin: it is falling short of His glory. No one would be foolish enough to claim, “Look at me, I am just as holy as God.” The Bible further emphasizes this by saying, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags,” as stated in Isaiah 64:6. Even at our very best, we remain unclean in the eyes of God.

Because all have sinned, we are separated from a holy God. Romans 6:23a states, “For the wages of sin is death.” In this context, death refers to separation. When a person dies physically, their soul separates from their body. However, if someone dies in their sin, they will be eternally separated from God in a place known as “the Lake of Fire” or Hell. Revelation 20:12-15 describes the judgment that will occur: “And I saw the dead, small and great, stand before God; and the books were opened: and another book was opened, which is the book of life: and the dead were judged out of those things which were written in the books, according to their works. And the sea gave up the dead which were in it; and death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them: and they were judged every man according to their works. And death and hell were cast into the lake of fire. This is the second death. And whosoever was not found written in the book of life was cast into the lake of fire.”

It is important to notice that these individuals were judged based on their works. They were attempting to earn their way into Heaven through their good deeds.

Because of God’s great love toward you, He made a way for you to go to Heaven through Christ. The Bible says, “But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us” Romans 5:8. God, through His mercy, sent His Son, Jesus to die your place.

When Jesus died on the cross, every sin mankind has ever committed entered into His This is why the world became dark—because the Light of this world was extinguished. In that moment, He cried out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” He became separated from God and died as a mortal man.

However, the good news is that He rose again and is able to “save them to the uttermost that come unto God by him, seeing he ever liveth to make intercession for them” (Hebrews 7:25).

Salvation is a gift and cannot be earned. As the Bible says, “For the wages of sin is death; but the GIFT of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ our Lord” (Romans 6:23). This gift of eternal life has been offered by God, but to make it your gift, you must receive Jesus. The Bible states, “But as many as received him, to them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name” (John 1:12).

Jesus is a gift offered by God, which is why He must be received in order to have eternal life. But what does it mean to believe in Him? To believe in Christ is to fully trust Him to save your soul. In other words, it is all about Him and none about you.

Are you willing to place your faith in Christ and receive Him into your life? The Bible says you can do this by asking God to save you: “For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved” (Romans 10:13).

On July 29, 1981, God saved me. I prayed something like this: “Lord Jesus, I don’t know how to come to you, but I will try. Please help me.” I chose to word my prayer this way because I was carrying a lot of baggage—I had lied, drank, smoked, and stolen, and done all kinds of vile things. I knew I couldn’t approach Him without His assistance. However, He met me where I was and began to help me transform my life.

If you come to Jesus with an honest and sincere heart, He will save you too. Simply say, “Lord Jesus, I don’t know how to come to you, but I am going to try. Please come into my life and help me. Today, I am placing my trust in You to save me.”

If you said this prayer, remember what John wrote: “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God” (1 John 5:13).

This is just the beginning of your spiritual journey. God expects you to draw near to Him and grow. I have written a workbook to help young believers understand how God works in their lives called “The Ultimate Gift of God.” Simp;y "click" on the link below for a free copy.

"The Ultimate Gift of God, written by Chaplain Athey, explores the concept of God’s “benefit package” for believers, focusing on the abundant life available through faith in Jesus Christ. Drawing from decades of experience as a prison chaplain, the author presents fourteen spiritual gifts or b...

A Sinner’s Only Hope

“And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him. And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners? When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance,” Mark 2:15-17.

The Pharisees began to watch Jesus closely, as He had previously claimed the power to forgive sins. They looked for something they could scrutinize, as they were intimidated by His ability to reach the crowds. On this occasion, they thought they had a legitimate accusation, as Christ sat down and ate with “sinners” and publicans, or IRS agents. In their reasoning, Christ could not be a man of God, or He would not have compromised His holiness by exposing Himself to sinners. What they did not realize was that Christ not only came to expose Himself to sinners, but He would become sin, as He hung on the cross of Calvary!

Some folks are so heavenly-minded that they are no earthly good. Religion is not a bad thing if you understand and realize that there are only two classes of people in the world—those who have accepted Christ and are trusting in Him, and those who have not. As far as sin goes, we are all sinners, just some hide theirs a little better than others. This is the beauty of Christ, as He came to “seek and to save that which was lost,” as He said, “They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.” And to this, all I can say is, “PRAISE GOD!” Because Christ is the only hope we have as sinners. ~This is just a thought.
