From Capital to Contracts: Capitalizing Underserved Suppliers and the Missing Middle to Strengthen Supply Chains

Despite increased attention to supply chain management, inclusive procurement, and small-business finance, supplier capital access remains fragmented and insufficiently connected to demand-side outcomes, especially for socially and economically disadvantaged individuals (SEDI business owners). Public and private sector actors continue to invest in capital, technical assistance, and capacity-building for suppliers and businesses identified as part of the “missing middle” through programs such as the State Small Business Credit Initiative. Yet too often, these efforts fall short of their intended goals: contract acquisition, revenue growth, and durable business expansion.

The U.S. Black Chambers, Inc. proudly congratulates Karla Causey, President of the Black Chamber of Commerce of New Mexico, on being honored with the prestigious SBA New Mexico District Legacy Award during the 2026 Small Business Awards ceremony hosted by the U.S. Small Business Administration New Mexico District Office on May 8, 2026.

The Legacy Award represents the SBA’s highest district honor and recognizes individuals whose long-standing leadership and dedication have created a lasting impact on the small business ecosystem. Karla Causey was honored “in recognition of your contribution to small businesses,” a testament to her unwavering commitment to advancing entrepreneurship and economic opportunity throughout New Mexico.
