As former managers of Sacred Grounds Cafe and owners of Honey's Desserts, we'd like to introduce you to Honey's Coffee Company. We used to bake the delicious desserts, and quiche served at the cafe. Plus, we offered some of the best coffee drinks in Southwest, DC. And, now we have our own brand of 12 oz. bags of Specialty Grade coffee beans straight from farmers all around the world. If you have walked near the corner of M Street and Delaware Ave lately, you may have noticed some extra-ordinary commotion of people and signs. The long awaited Sacred Grounds Cafe: Coffee with a Purpose is now open and offers the neighborhood a modestly priced and cozy dining alternative.
The Cafe is located within the beautiful new St Matthew’s Lutheran Church at the corner of Delaware Ave and M Street, and is managed by Marie Stanley and Cathy Stanley, both of whom have a long history of managing local businesses. The cafe brews delicious coffee that is local and sustainably sourced by Rise Up Coffee Roasters and offers freshly baked tarts, sweet breads, cakes, and muffins by Honey’s Desserts, which makes for delightful accompaniments to our premium coffee. Customers can purchase a bag of coffee to brew at home as well as order whole loaves of our sweet breads; everyone have been enjoying our sweet potato bread with cream cheese frosting!
Why “Coffee with a Purpose?”
A customer recently came into Sacred Grounds and asked “What’s the purpose?” The purpose begins with the coffee we sell. It is fair trade and organic. Rise Up Coffee Roasters, in Easton, Maryland, has a personal relationship with the Central American farmers that grow the beans. They make regular visits to the area to make sure the fair trade promise to the farmers is kept. Sacred Grounds exists to provide good coffee, delicious food, and exceptional hospitality to our Southwest neighborhood and surrounding areas. It also exists to provide a central gathering place for friends and neighbors in the gorgeous and spacious setting of St Matthew’s building and outdoor courtyard. All of this helps to form the ‘purpose’ of Coffee with a Purpose.
Sacred Grounds is open Monday-Friday 8am-4pm, Saturday 8am-5pm, and Sundays 8am-1pm. When the weather warms up in the spring and summer, Sacred Grounds will extend the hours of operation to later in the evening as well as opening our outdoor courtyard and green space, equipped with ample seating and umbrellas.
