Processing day.

I’m not going to show the graphic parts, but I do want to share the connection we have with our food.

Before these birds left this earth, I prayed over them. We cared for them from the day they arrived until their very last moment. Raising animals for food is not something we take lightly, and it’s never something we do without gratitude and respect.

My kids participated in the process and learned where their food truly comes from. It’s not an easy lesson, but it’s an important one. They saw that nourishment doesn’t just appear in a grocery store it comes with responsibility, hard work, and thankfulness.

Today was a reminder that food is a gift. We are grateful for these birds and for the nourishment they will provide for our family in the months ahead.

“Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good; His love endures forever.” — Psalm 107:1

Skip raising chicks and start with a ready to go laying flock!
all birds are hand tamed and raised around kids, so they are calm, friendly, and easy to handle. Great for beginners or backyard flocks.

There’s something so rewarding about taking one plant and turning it into many. 🌱
A few cuttings, patience, water, and care… and now my sage, rosemary, and Vicks (vaporub) plant are rooting and growing beautifully.

One of my favorite parts of homesteading is learning how God designed creation to multiply. Watching roots grow from a simple clipping never gets old. 🤍

Slowly filling our home and garden with things we can grow ourselves, share with others, and use for our family.

“Those who trust in the Lord will be like a tree planted by the water… its leaves remain green and it is not anxious in the year of drought.” — Jeremiah 17:7-8 🌿

It’s almost time for these meat birds to be processed this weekend.
I’ve been feeding them twice a day, letting them free range when I can, watching them grow fast and fill out like they’re supposed to. They’ve done exactly what they were raised for.

And still… there’s always that mix of feelings.

On one hand, there’s the good part — knowing where our food comes from, raising it ourselves, feeding them clean, giving them a good life outside in the sun scratching around like chickens should.

On the other hand, there’s the sad part. Because even when you know the purpose, you still see them every day. You still talk to them. You still notice the ones that are a little braver, a little calmer, a little more “theirs” than just livestock.

Homesteading is like that. It’s gratitude and responsibility all mixed together.

This weekend they’ll be processed, and I’m thankful for the food they’ll provide for my family. But I won’t pretend it doesn’t come with a little heaviness too.

That’s part of the circle out here.

your sourdough starter smells like alcohol or “too sour,” it doesn’t mean it’s bad 🍞

It usually just means it’s hungry.

A couple good feedings at room temperature can bring it right back to life.

Starters are way more forgiving than most people think 🌿

Hi everyone 👋🌿
After sharing yesterday about the upcoming workshops, I thought I’d properly introduce myself for all the new faces here!

I’m Allie, and I run a small personal farm where I focus on simple, self-efficient living and learning practical everyday skills 🐓🍅🍞

The upcoming workshops will include:
🌱 Gardening
🍞 Sourdough baking
🐐 Animal care
🏡 Simple homestead and self-sufficient living skills

Everything I share comes from real hands-on experience, learning as I go, and a genuine love for this lifestyle. I’m excited to create a space where we can learn, share, and grow together 🌻

Over the next few weeks, I’ll be posting little behind-the-scenes moments, tips, and workshop updates as we get closer to launch 👀

I’d love to know — what part of self-sufficient living are you most interested in learning about? ⬇️

Farm lesson of the day 🌾🐐

He didn’t want to fill the hay nets at first. Complaining, dragging his feet, the whole thing. But little by little he grabbed the hay, stuffed the nets, and got the job done.

This is farm life with kids — learning responsibility, helping care for the animals, and realizing that sometimes the chores we don’t want to do still need to be done.

By the end of it, the goats were fed and he was pretty proud of himself… even if he won’t admit it. ❤️

One of the most special moments of our year happened this week on the homestead. 🐣

Our kids got to experience something incredible — 21 baby chicks hatching from eggs laid by our own flock. From collecting the eggs, to carefully placing them in the incubator, to hearing the first tiny peeps and watching them break through their shells… and finally watching them break out of their shells.

Seeing their excitement and curiosity through the whole process reminded us how powerful hands-on learning can be. Moments like these stay with kids forever — witnessing the miracle of life right in front of them.

Tiny beaks, fluffy feathers, and a whole lot of excitement in our home today. 💛
