Pops’ Story

Pops’ Cheese Straws didn’t get their start in Vestavia Hills, Alabama until 2017, but their story goes back much further than that.

Hamp “Pops” Smith began making cheese straws at the request of a friend back in the mid 70’s. Known for his baking ability and forever willingness to help another, he was tasked with making cheese straws to be used as Christmas gifts for a family friend. When the recipe was provided and the first batch baked, it didn’t live up to either his or the friend’s expectations. That’s where Pops’ determination and culinary talent took over, experimenting with the ingredients until the perfect combination was born. From that day forward, Pops has been selling his cheese straws locally to the community of Newnan, Ga., and anyone that has ever had them will tell you they are the best. His now famous recipe has remained a family secret and has been passed down through three generations, where it is still made the same way today by his grandson Paul Yeager, as well as by his cousins, aunts and uncles alike.

They are made fresh to order, starting with the best sharp cheddar cheese, hand shredded, hand mixed, and hand baked for that perfect combination of savory cheese, spice, and crunch. From our kitchen to yours, we hope you enjoy Pops’ Cheese Straws as much as we do (especially my son Hayes, my number one critic).
