Hi everyone! I’m so excited to (re)introduce myself for all our new and longtime Birdie’s Batchers 🍓

I’m Sara, co-founder of Birdie’s Batch, mother, wife, and breast cancer survivor! I’ve spent my career totally immersed in food, storytelling, and hospitality. I started out in magazine journalism writing for publications like Men’s Health and Oprah, which eventually led me into the test kitchen at Saveur, where I got to help develop recipes and contribute to Saveur: The New Classics Cookbook.

I’m also a graduate of the French Culinary Institute in Classic Culinary Arts, and after that I spent seven years in restaurant operations as Director of Food Operations for The Fireman Hospitality Group.

These days, when I’m not cooking up seasonal jams and baked goods for Birdie’s Batch, you’ll probably find me deep in a stack of cookbooks looking for inspiration. At home, I’m a mom to two very snack-enthusiastic girls and married to my high school sweetheart, which keeps life just as full and sweet as our jars 💛

Running a seasonal jam business becomes difficult when Mother Nature doesn’t cooperate. The cold snap we had in April stunted the strawberry harvest, which means we’ve been running around the Hudson Valley in search of locally grown berries. Fishkill Farms and The Orchards of Conklin had limited supply, but we snagged what we could, and we’ll be making as many jars as possible of strawberry jam and strawberry balsamic this week.

Come try this year’s batch on Saturday (6/6) at Tarrytown or Sunday (6/7) at Piermont (or order online!).

A million years ago, I worked in the test kitchen at Saveur magazine. I loved how the magazine wrote about small towns all over the world and followed grandmothers—rather than professional chefs—into their kitchens to learn traditional recipes. I haven’t picked up an issue of the magazine in years, but when I saw they published an article about marmalade that was recently nominated for a award, I knew I had to invest in a copy (they only publish quarterly).

The article is so beautiful and ends with the wise words of Paddington Bear’s Aunt Lucy: Some foods are so laden with memory, they feel like a lifeline.

We couldn’t agree more.

(Third photo shows me working in the test kitchen.)

In October 2024, I was diagnosed with breast cancer. Last month I officially finished treatment!! This morning, myself and 29 members of my family and friends ran a 5k to raise money for the local cancer organization under the team name, “Breast Friends.” It was such a beautiful day and I have to give a big thank you to my sister for making it extra special. Thank you to everyone who has showed up for me over these past two years. Full disclosure: I took the day off and bought the cake :).
