After ODVGC's very successful May 16 plant sale- we sold over 1200 perennials and shrubs- we now look to the future and further exciting events. On June 11, Thomas Johnson will speak on Monarch Butterflies, at 12:30 pm, St. John's Reformed Church, Red Hook. A very timely subject indeed. We are also preparing a booth for the Horticultural exhibition at the Dutchess County Fair.

ODVGC started off the summer season with an impressive turnout at our plant sale May 16. We want to thank all the local gardeners who purchased our plants, and donated plants from their own gardens, helping to beautify our community and contribute to our club's activities. We sold over 1200 perennials, shrubs, and even a few houseplants in the mix. Here is a photo of buyers searching over the plants just after we opened the sale.

It's time to think about Spring, and what better way than to attend ODVGC's popular plant sale happening on May 16. Right now, we seek plant donations from the community. Last year, we sold over 2,000 perennials, herbs and shrubs which came to us through donations. The donation deadline for plants is May 3. We also seek gently used garden tools, ornaments, planters and pots. With questions or to give donations, please call Linda at 845-399-9532. If you can't dig up your own plant donations, we will do so for you.

Meanwhile, ODVGC members continue to keep busy. We maintain our Memorial Garden near CVS so locals can enjoy a pleasant place to sit once weather improves. On March 12, Serena Starzyk spoke at our meeting about how to get rid of invasive plants and replace them with native plants that naturally occur in our region and help the environment. She has spoken to us before about garden issues, is very knowledgeable, and can be reached through Cornell Cooperative Extension.

In April, we will celebrate ODVGC at our Anniversary Luncheon. In May, we plan to visit Innisfree Garden. A presentation by Thomas Johnson on monarch butterflies is scheduled for June 11. In late August, we plan to have a booth in the Horticultural Building at the County Fair.

Our meetings usually occur the second Thursday of each month at St. John's Reformed Church, Upper Red Hook, at 12:30 pm. Keep track of our activities on our page.

We look forward to seeing you!

ODVGC members are getting ready for Spring! At our Feb. 12 meeting, Michelle Decker taught us how to prune shrubs! A professional gardener since 1985, she demonstrated the techniques, timing and tools that will keep our garden shrubs beautiful and healthy. Everyone learned a lot, and was very interested to see the hearts inside of wood cut from a lilac.

Now that we are ready to shape and care for our shrubs at home, we turn our attention to preparations for our popular annual PLANT SALE in May. Local gardeners stay tuned to our Facebook announcements! This event will be your chance to beautify your garden with new plants and gardening bargains.

ODVGC's 2026 plans include special meals, trips, and a June 11 presentation on Monarch Butterflies. Our meetings usually happen the second Thursday of each month, 12:30 pm, at St. John's Reformed Church in Upper Red Hook. We hope you can join us!

On December 18, ODVGC members got together for a delicious Christmas luncheon at the Red Hook VFW. We were all impressed with the food prepared by Red Hook Responds Executive Chef Leslie Pulver. While we enjoyed turkey with trimmings- and a vegetarian main dish as well- plus sweet potatoes, mashed potatoes, green beans and more! a four member choral ensemble of Red Hook High School students sang Christmas carols for us. Thank you to Sam, Aiden, Vince and Lumi- your beautiful singing gave us joy and helped create the spirit of the holidays!

Thank you to those club members who helped organize this luncheon including Penny Conroe who made sure it was a success.

After the wonderful meal and singing, a candle ceremony for the induction of ODVGC's 2026 officers took place. They are Nola Weit, President; Carol Annas, Corresponding Secretary; Janet del Rosario, Recording Secretary; and Cathy Michael, Treasurer. ODVGC member Jon Conroe assisted with the ceremony.

On January 8, 2026, ODVGC will continue to enjoy great cooking at our soup luncheon and meeting at 12:30 PM, Saint John's Reformed Church, Upper Red Hook. See you then!!

At the ODVGC November 13 meeting, members were inspired by and learned from Triana Fritsch who spoke about "Natural Decorating for the Winter Months."

As Winter approaches, Triana showed us that we as gardeners are not limited to trimming back dried plants and flowers. She demonstrated how to create from dry blossoms, stems and seed pods some wonderful arrangements, garlands, wreaths, and more! Those present were very inspired to go out to their gardens and try to follow her suggestions.

A team of members has volunteered to decorate our Memorial Garden near CVS in Red Hook for the holidays and you will soon see this new garden transformation.

On December 18, ODVGC will meet for our annual Christmas luncheon, this year at the Veterans of Foreign Wars post in Red Hook. A family style meal will be cooked by a chef from Red Hook Responds and four local high school students will sing Christmas carols for those attending.

You are encouraged to join us at our meetings the second Thursday of most months at 12:30 PM at St. John's Reformed Church in Upper Red Hook. Some months such as this December we have events on other dates instead of a regular meeting. Keep up with us on our page as we share our plans for 2026!

ODVGC's members look forward to our next meeting on Nov. 13 when Triana Fritsch will speak and demonstrate about "Natural Decorating for the Winter Months." We will learn how to use natural materials from the garden that are often overlooked in the winter and how to incorporate them into wreaths, garlands, dried arrangements and even Christmas Trees.

At our last meeting on October. 9, Jay Bell- with 25 years of experience as a florist including work with private clients- showed us how to make affordable bouquets with supermarket purchased flowers. His tips on how to maximize the impact of the bouquets were very appreciated! His large bouquets and smaller arrangements from his demonstration were given to members through a drawing at the end of his presentation.

As ODVGC plans to remove our wonderful Fall decorations from the 4 Corners soon, we urge everyone to take a last look at them. We have received many compliments from the Red Hook community about how they help to beautify that area.

Since last year at this time, ODVGC has been fortunate to have added quite a few new members. We say welcome to them all! Members can look forward to our holiday luncheon on Dec. 18 at Red Hook's VFW.

Remember, we meet the second Thursday of every month, with some exceptions for food events, at 12:30 pm, St. John's Reformed Church, Upper Red Hook. See you then!!
