All children deserve to grow up.
This organization, and all they do, has pulled at my heartstrings since the moment I learned of them.
As I was driving to work one morning, listening to my usual radio morning show, I heard Gretchen Holt-Witt speak about her son, Liam, who was diagnosed with cancer when he was just two and a half years old. After she learned about the lack of research grants specifically for pediatric cancer, she organized a massive bake sale (baking over 96,000 cookies) to raise funds and awareness. Tragically, Liam lost his battle but his legacy lives on with Cookies for Kids Cancer and the fundraising that continues in his honor.
I arrived at work that day in a complete emotional mess with running mascara down my cheeks. It was then that I knew I wanted to be involved with this organization.
I was inspired by Gretchen’s determination to continue raising funds for pediatric cancer research after Liam’s passing knowing she would have to relive and retell the tragic story again and again. But then again, I thought, that’s how his memory will continue to live forever. As a mom with two small boys of my own, I’m awed at the strength and bravery of parents with small children diagnosed with cancer. It’s not something anyone should have to experience and I believe there are more successful and less toxic treatments waiting to be discovered.
That’s why for the entire month of May, I’m holding a virtual bake sale with all proceeds going to Cookies for Kids Cancer. I’m straying away from my usual sugar cookies and offering four gourmet flavors instead (Coffee Cake, Lemon Poppyseed, Circus Animal Party, and Double Chocolate Marshmallow). You can be a Good Cookie by ordering some cookies and knowing you are helping fund pediatric cancer research.
