TULIPS
FUN FACTS
🌹They originate from Turkey NOT Holland
🌹We all think we know where the tulip comes from. Tulips are one of the iconic symbols of Holland and although Holland is the largest producer of tulip bulbs and flowers, the flower actually originated in Turkey, where they grow in the wild.
🌹Tulips are wildflowers native to central Asia in the Tien Shan Mountains near the Russian-Chinese border. They spread west and were cultivated in the Ottoman Empire (modern-day Turkey) by 1000 A.D., when the sultans introduced huge beds of tulips to parks and palace gardens. Tulips were brought to Holland, via Great Britain, in the late 1500s.
🌹Tulip comes in many different varieties.
Normally the standard tulip shape may automatically come to mind but you can also get fringed or double varieties, to name just a few. In fact, there are over 3,000 different varieties of tulip. Generally, tulips symbolize love, but there is a different meaning based on the color of tulip in question.
🌹For love and romance, red tulips are the way to go. If you want to convey an apology, white tulips are the flowers that you seek. Because they are both elegant and simple, tulips have become symbols for a range of things. These include enduring love between partners or family, royalty, and neglected love. They are also the flower for the 11th wedding anniversary.
🌹Purple tulip flowers are historically associated with royalty because purple dye was rare and only accessible to the super-wealthy royal queens and kings of previous times. If you want to spoil someone you think is deserving of royal status, gift them a delightful bouquet of purple tulips.
🌹Tulips are part of the equally beautiful Lily family and distant relatives to onions, garlic and asparagus. The petals are edible and have been used as an onion substitute and to make wine. Tulips were commonly used in food during the Dutch famine over the course of World War II.
🌹Tulips follow the sun even when they’re in a vase. That’s why you need to move them around your home during different times of the day and they continue to grow after they’ve been cut.
