Another scam attempt. My background is in fraud prevention and detection for a bank so I am always on high alert. I just recently started my home baking business within the last month or two. I received an email from a lady claiming to work for a law firm in South Carolina. She wanted to order 240 cupcakes for a corporate event they were holding in SLC on 11/21. I want to share the red flags with you that wouldn’t appear weird to anyone else.
1-Her email was a gmail account with the firms company in her signature.
2-The grammar was off. Not well written for someone working in a law firm.
3-Their accountant had a yahoo email.
4-they sent me a digital check which can be fine from someone who is legit but you should always be leery. Always have your bank hold the funds and have them make a call to the issuing banks fraud department to verify the check.
5-the check was from an address in Virginia with a person name not the business.
6-I looked up the address in the lady’s email signature and it went to residential address, not a business.
7-they weren’t pushy at all until I got the check and they insisted that I use mobile deposit and send them a screenshot. No legitimate business will do this.

I googled the phone number for the actual business and called them directly. They confirmed that they have no one by that name working for them and I am not the only one this has happened to. Trust your gut. Verify info. Over verify. You can’t be too careful. I hope this helps at least one of my fellow bakers. I will also be posting this in other baking groups I’m in. Stay safe!
