Erie Street Cookies

Erie Street Cookies Following family traditions Now, I carry on the baking in the family, as a Cottage Baker.

Some of my cookies are based on recipes from my mother, who baked many dozens of cookies at each holiday when we lived on Erie Street in Spring Valley. She was well known for her frosted cut-out cookies, and after her passing, my father took over the baking and continued her traditions.

Have you ever had Tsoureki? It’s a sweet Greek Easter bread, usually braided and baked with hard-boiled red eggs in the braids. My mother’s family was from Greece, and although we didn’t have traditional Greek foods often, I remember my mother and her sister, Mary cracking the red-dyed eggs at Easter.
This weekend is the Greek Easter.
Christos Anesti to my Greek friends!

I wonder how many of you have special family recipes that have been passed down through generations and still made? Some of the recipes I make are just those, passed down from others and only made by one or two in the family, who are trying to keep them alive and memorable for new generations.
The frosted cut-out cookies I make were first started by my mom, then continued by my dad after she passed away and he made them by the hundreds! Neither of my sisters attempted to make them, but always enjoyed them when I made them for holidays (almost every holiday).
I enjoy making our Greek recipes of Baklava and Spanakopita too, for family to enjoy.
Which special recipes are you keeping alive for your family?

My mother shared the story that when she and her siblings were young, her mother would bake a Greek bread or cake for New Years and hide a coin in it. Whoever got the coin, had good luck for the coming new year. This is a tradition with the Vasilopita bread.

Wishing all of my baking friends a wonderful new year in 2026!
