Hello, Summer! Despite June 21 being the recognized official first day of the season, we’ve all been living with sweltering sun-filled days for a while. Still, that doesn’t mean we go into complete hibernation as this month holds lots to celebrate and do.
Father’s Day also falls on June 21, so if your dad, grandad, uncle or dad figure in your life has a sweet tooth, let us make his decadent dreams come true with a custom confection made just for him. We’ve also got savory snacks, wine, vermouth and N/A options to round out any gift basket. We’ll be happy to have you pick our brain so just ask.
Baseball season is in full swing and did you know you can bring your own food into Chase Field? Be the envy of your fellow Diamondbacks fans with better-than-ballpark snacks and save a few bucks in the process. As long as they are in a gallon-sized plastic resealable bag, cookies, snack mix and other treats are fare game (pun intended).
We will be taking a little summer break July 2-15 to rest, relax and recharge. But we will be back at it for our usual days and hours starting Thursday, July 16.
If you are looking to chill out with a good book over the next few months, Simon & Schuster’s Bookcation Summer Reading Guide offers some cool recommendations. Whether you're looking to beat the heat with spine-tingling thrillers, sizzling romantasies, or transformative coming-of-age tales, this list has something for you to enjoy the long days of summer.
Theo of Golden
Theo, 86, arrives in the small town of Golden, Georgia, and begins a quiet mission of anonymous generosity, buying pencil portraits of residents from a local coffee shop and returning them to their owners in exchange for their stories. This leads to connection, healing and reflection on kindness and human goodness. This breakout novel by first-time author Allen Levi was initially self-published in 2023, but became a surprise bestseller.
My Friends
An unforgettably funny, deeply moving tale of four teenagers whose friendship creates a bond so powerful that it changes a complete stranger’s life twenty-five years later drives Fredrik Backman’s tale of the profound, life-altering power of camaraderie. It’s told through two intertwined timelines: the present-day journey of an 18-year-old artist named Louisa, and the story of four teenagers in a seaside town 25 years prior who formed an unbreakable bond while escaping difficult home lives.
The Lion Women of Tehran
Set in 1950s Tehran, Marjan Kamali’s story focuses on the friendship of two 7-year-old girls from different rungs of society brought together when Ellie and her mother are forced to leave their opulent life and move to a tiny home after the death of her father. Ellie meets Homa and together they form a connection. But their friendship ends when Ellie and her mother are afforded the opportunity to return to their previous comfortable lifestyle. Years later, however, Homa’s sudden reappearance in Ellie’s privileged world alters the course of both of their lives. Together, the two young women come of age and pursue their own goals for meaningful futures. But as the political turmoil in Iran builds to a breaking point, one earth-shattering betrayal will have enormous consequences.
Homebound
This sci-fi yarn begins in 1983, with 19-year-old Becks clamoring to get out of Cincinnati after the death of her beloved uncle. But before she leaves, she must finish a computer game he left half-completed. Through this task, Becks will shape the lives of a scientist, robot and sea captain, all, like Becks, searching for connection. Portia Elan uses these interlocking lives to narrate a dazzling adventure across centuries and continents in search of the things that hold us together.
The Fourth Option
This is bestselling authors Jack Carr and M.P. Woodward’s launch of a new series with protagonist former Navy SEAL and CIA ground branch operative Chris Walker, who’s about to end his life when he receives a call that saves it. The wife of a teammate he lost in Afghanistan has now lost her son to the opioid crisis and needs Walker’s help. Thrust into a conspiracy that goes deeper than he ever imagined, Walker must go up against the system and the very Constitution he once swore an oath to support and defend in order to find justice for his friend’s widow.
The Burning Side
When April and Leo’s house burns down in the middle of the night, they escape with their two young children and the quiet knowledge that the fire is not the only thing threatening their family. They retreat to April’s childhood home in Dallas, where her spirited parents and siblings provide both comfort and complication. Sarah Damoff’s family saga unfolds through multiple perspectives as April and Leo confront secrets, their past and future, and ultimately what is worth salvaging.
The River is Waiting
New father Corby battles a secret addiction that’s jeopardizing his marriage and causes a tragic accident that results in his imprisonment. While he struggles to survive in confinement, Corby bears witness to frightful acts of brutality but also experiences small acts of kindness and kinship with a prison librarian and some of his fellow offenders, including a tender-hearted cellmate and a troubled teen desperate for a role model. Through these connections, he begins to transcend the boundaries of the bars, sustained by his hope that mercy and reconciliation might still be possible. This is the third novel by Wally Lamb that has been named an Oprah’s Book Club selection.
It Could Have Been Her
Lisa Jewel’s psychological thriller starts with Jane finding a lost dog on her English country estate. Alone and with no sign of the teenaged girl he’d been staying with nearby, Jane learns the girl is reported missing and she returns the dog to his owner. Arriving at a run-down house called Thornwood in the deepest backwaters of Hampstead, she is immediately on alert because Jane has a dark history with this house. The cagey man who answers the door is not the man that Jane remembers from her past. Then, through the window of the house, Jane catches a glimpse of a haunted-looking woman. Conjuring memories from 25 years ago, Jane knows this unsettling house holds the key—to the missing teenager, to her own traumatic story, and to the dark secrets of the past. The novel, a slow-burn mystery, explores buried secrets and toxic family dynamics, with a plot that unfolds through multiple timelines and points of view, keeping readers guessing until the end.
The Romance Revival
Set for release in July, Christina Lauren’s romance novel focuses on a scientist who uses her cutting-edge research to bring back her husband after a tragic accident, only to find he has no memory of their life together, giving her a second chance to win him back. Heartwarming and humorous, romance and science fiction unite in this story in which a fateful accident erases a troubled marriage from memory - and a scientific breakthrough gives love one extraordinary do-over.
And with that, we wish you happy reading, a fantastic summer and we look forward to seeing you soon!
