Earlier this week, I had the privilege of donating cookies for my doctor's retirement party.
Dr. Bruch has been my endocrinologist since 1998. I was a young adult with juvenile Type 1 diabetes, passing out from severe lows, struggling with extreme highs, and carrying an A1C of 9.5. He was strict, by the book, and exactly the doctor I needed.
Because of his guidance, I learned how to manage my blood sugars, started using an insulin pump, had a healthy, complication-free pregnancy, and just two weeks ago reached an A1C of 6.7.
After 34 years of living with Type 1 diabetes, I still have all my toes, no neuropathy, no eye disease, and a healthy 23-year-old son. I know those blessings didn't happen by chance. I truly don't believe I would be where I am today without Dr. Bruch's patience, guidance, and belief in me.
Saying "thank you" never felt like enough for someone who has helped give me 28 years of healthier, complication-free life.
Dr. Bruch, thank you for never giving up on me. I know I was probably your "red-headed stepchild" patient at times, but you always believed I could do it. And I promised you I'd get my A1C where it needed to be before you retired.
It may have only been two weeks before your retirement, but I did it.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart. ❤️ Enjoy your cookies and your retirement—you've more than earned them both.
