Local family history enthusiasts are invited to the LDS Family History Center to hear Brenda Gilbertson, Center Coordinator, discuss and demonstrate the familysearch,org use of Full-Text Search, primarily used on its non-indexed record sets. A reminder from Ms. Gilbertson asks that you have your familysearch.org User Name and Password if you would like to practice using Full-Text Search on the Center's computers that evening. The public is invited to this, our first Twin Ports Genealogical Society meeting of the 2026/2027 Program year. Doors open at 5:30, with presentation beginning at 6 PM.

The Bay Area collection includes original records from landmark birthright citizenship case United States v. Wong Kim Ark, and inmate records from Alcatraz. Federal officials didn’t provide details about where the records would go.

We have billions for the Felon's war of choice, and for his ego projects of gold, but not to save the history of our country. ---While it’s unclear whether the latest closure has a political undertone, archivists have long complained that the federal government has not adequately funded the archives. That funding supports the infrastructure protecting delicate records as well as the digitization of physical documents, a complex process that involves scanning records and then tagging the data so that researchers can find the information online.
“NARA has been chronically underfunded for decades,” said Sarah Weicksel, executive director of the American Historical Association, the largest professional organization of historians in the world. “When Congress is not providing enough funding to support that infrastructure, to support digitization and to support the staff whose expertise is required to process records, you are necessarily going to have an archives that is not performing at its full capacity.”

The closure of the South Side center will take place “over the next few years.” The records and documents will be relocated, but it’s unclear where and how many employees are affected.

The Twin Ports Genealogical Society helps people research and preserve their family histories through educational programs, cemetery clean-up and grave-recording projects, local databases, and more. If you’ve ever wanted to learn more about researching your family history, the Society will be offering Genealogy 101 classes this spring. We appreciate them sharing their time with us.

The Legislative-Citizen Commission on Minnesota Resources voted to include $1.44 million for the Scandia Cemetery project on its list of recommendations for 2027.
