Today’s Caterpillar Tunnel build was a success! UConn Extension folks are fantastic, friends from Brown Farm who led the build are so knowledgeable and gracious, and it was so lovely to connect with other growers in the state interested in learning more about building tunnels. Stay tuned for more pictures and video but I’m just really thankful to be a part of such an awesome farming community here in CT.

Unfortunately, I have a terrible migraine, likely caused by the drastic temperature change and allergies, and will be unable to attend tomorrow morning’s Willimantic Farmers’ Market. I’m still planning to try to make it to Storrs and will post tomorrow exactly what I’ll be bringing. I apologize for the inconvenience!

My first time using the BCS 853 tractor and I’m loving it! I’m getting a late start to the season because first-generation beginning farmer + home bakery with 2 full time farmers markets and preorders (and kids!) is tricky business. But, lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, radishes, peas, onions and carrots are coming along and squash, zucchini, eggplant, melon, and the tomatoes and peppers that aren’t going in the caterpillar tunnel will all go in the ground in the next few days.

“Sam, should I start selling dog treats?? Well folks, I think Sam made his opinion pretty clear 😆He feels very strongly that I should get my commercial feed license back in order so I can hurry up and bring yummy dog treats to the markets and farm store! Fun fact: I actually started the process a few years ago!

In the meantime, you can preorder plenty of yummy human treats for pickup Wednesday at Hillyndale Road and Saturday at the Willimantic and Storrs Farmers Markets. Preorder here: https://www.hillyndaleroadfarm.com/preorder

Two of the biggest hurdles for beginning farmers are access to land and access to capital & equipment. I’m incredibly grateful to have a long-term lease for my land and for the Connecticut Resource Conservation & Development - CT RC&D equipment sharing program. This week I’ll be using the BCS walk-behind tractor with the flail mower and compost spreader attachments to get things moving in the field. I also have my trailer ready for the mobile coop build that I’m hoping to tackle this week. Busy season is definitely here!

Wow, it’s wild looking back at this post from December 2024 and realizing that this dream started long before that. Even before I first opened in early 2024, I dreamed of having a farm store—a place that would bring together everything I love creating and growing in one space. While life has led me to pivot in some ways due to family responsibilities, this dream never changed.

I may not have the commercial kitchen yet, but seeing the farm store finally becoming a reality feels surreal. I’m beyond excited the foundation will soon be layed and it will ideally be built and open in June.

Think my breads and baked goods, farm-fresh produce, organic pasture-raised eggs, local honey and maple syrup, jams, seasonings, and eventually my homemade all-natural cleaning products, dog treats and more. Years of dreaming, planning, and building toward this moment—and it’s finally starting to happen 💜
