☕️☕️☕️
Met my younger self for coffee today
She was five minutes late, and so was I so we hugged and chatted in the parking lot
I ordered an iced vanilla latte and she ordered a hot chai, and we laughed at how basic we were and also how basic we grew up to be
I confessed that in my twenties I’d have ordered something that sounded more adult-ish even if I didn’t like it, and how thankfully we outgrew that and order whatever basic drink we want now
She asked if I was dating anyone and we both marveled that I’ve been married to my best friend for almost 10 years and that we didn’t pull that scene from runaway bride like we always joked about
I described my husband and we both teared up, and she said he sounds perfect. I told her he pretty much is. She asked to see a picture, I said she wouldn’t believe me if I showed her the dreamboat we landed so she’d have to wait and meet him in real life
She asked if we have kids, I said yes. A little boy and a littler girl. She said we really hit the jackpot and I said we really did
She asked if I had any advice for her. I said gosh yes, so much.
But then I realized we ended up where we are today in spite of ourselves, and that God used each chapter in ways we couldn’t have anticipated, and is still using in ways we couldn’t have anticipated
So I told her to drink more water
She rolled her eyes and said I sound like Mom, and I smiled and said thank you
She said she had to get going, she had a hot yoga class she didn’t want to miss. We hugged and agreed to get together again soon
She left the parking lot the back way because she doesn’t like making left turns on busy streets, and I followed her because neither do I
I texted her “Thanks for grabbing coffee! Enjoy yoga. Lets get another date on the calendar to catch up soon”
She hasn’t replied and I’m sure my message is in a pile of other unread texts on her phone
Which doesn’t offend me, because we still do that
