One thing Iβve learned as a small baker is that my prices will probably never compete with grocery store prices, and thatβs okay!
When you buy a cake from a big box store, youβre often buying something that was produced on a large scale, multiple employees, with ingredients purchased in bulk, premade fillings, icing that comes in buckets, and products designed for efficiency.
The truth is, there are times I probably donβt charge enough because I genuinely try to keep my cakes as affordable as I can while still valuing my time and work that goes into them. It is a lot more involved than what people see in the final product.
Can you find a cheaper cake somewhere else? Absolutely. Can you bake one yourself? Absolutely. In fact, I think homemade cakes are incredibly special! There is nothing wrong with choosing the option that works best for your budget.
However, people need to remember kindness goes a long way. If my prices arenβt within your budget, thatβs completely okay. But telling a small business owner that you can get it cheaper elsewhere or make it yourself for cheaper isnβt always as helpful as you may think. Most of us bakers already know that. A little grace and consideration in how we speak to one another can make a big difference.
When you support a small baker, youβre not just paying for ingredients. Youβre paying for time, skill, creativity, attention to detail, and a product made with care from start to finish.
To everyone who has supported Wildflour Confections, shared my posts, ordered a cake or sweet treat, or encouraged my little business in any way, thank you. Your support allows me to keep doing what I love, and I appreciate you more than you know. π
