Café Closing Q&A with Janco

Q: Why are you closing the cafe?
A: As these matters are often extremely personal, it is not appropriate to ask this question of someone you do not know personally. However, I am comfortable sharing my experience: I started this business as a healthy individual with a few responsibilities outside of work. Life has changed to include more responsibilities, and my health has declined for reasons beyond my control. To care for myself now requires me to step back from the business, and the business has not reached a point where it could run without me… so operations must be reduced to the extent that I can care for them and myself at the same time.

Q: Have you thought of trying …?
A: Yes. And, as a rule, we do not accept business advice from anyone who does not currently sell fully scratch-made, perishable, edible, licensed products. Thanks for the understanding.

Q: I got a Gift Certificate that I haven’t had a chance to use yet—what happens to it?
A: Wander Provisions and The Frozen Local have agreed to honor all Nectar Bakery Gift Certificates ❤️ You can spend them at their businesses!

Q: I signed a wedding/event contract with you—should I be worried?
A: No. All 2024 contracts are still valid and will still be fulfilled! 🍰💍✨

Q: Can I place an order with you soon?
A: Probably not. We are not accepting orders for former cafe menu items, and our books for 2024 cakes are already full! Check back on our website for ordering info in the future.

Q: Can I get your recipes?
A: With any luck, we hope to someday put together a little flip book of our cafe recipes 🍪😋

Q: How will I survive without Nectar??
A: You will, we promise :) One of the best parts of human nature is adaptability, after all. Spring Green is constantly shifting and changing—we are sure you’ll find something else to love next!

Thanks for all the love and understanding! We’re looking forward to this new chapter 🤩

Lengthy Announcement: We are closing the doors of Nectar Bakery Cafe as it currently stands.

IMPORTANT NOTE: before commenting, please visit the Cafe Closing Q&A post following this one to answer your FAQs.

We have had such a wonderful time growing over these four years from a little market stand to a full-fledged bakery and cafe, serving our community in more ways than one. Offering a gathering place, a safe space for all bodies, ethically curated and lovingly prepared ingredients, and an end destination for the seasonal bounty of local farms were all goals that we set out to accomplish. We are proud to say that we accomplished that and more!

But owning a small business, especially in food, is a devils bargain in our current culture. The businesses that thrive unironically in modern culture must source unethically, work their employees unethically hard, pay them unethically low wages (are you sensing a theme?), and put profits before people at every opportunity. Every small food business is struggling, as we try to behave more responsibly than our mega-corporation competitors, but can’t always raise prices enough to cover these morals. “This is America, and food should be cheap.”

Still, there is nothing to blame except perhaps the system itself. If society truly wanted small businesses to thrive, good healthcare wouldn’t be contingent upon who your employer is; housing would be affordable—and in our area, reliably available in the first place—so employees could live comfortably & nearby; we’d be encouraged to place a higher value on quality over frugality; and there would be safety nets in place for the self-employed so the longevity of a business didn’t directly correlate to how long the owner(s) can live off their life savings before depletion.

ANYWAY, despite the way things are and will evidently continue to be, Nectar Bakery will persist, just in a different form. We will close the storefront to focus on weddings and events for 2025 and beyond. (Yes, this means we are booked through 2024) Stay tuned for updates! And, again, please visit the coming Q&A post.

Much Love,
Nectar Bakery
