Spokane Symphony Assistant Concertmaster Jeanne Bourgeois Swanson has entranced our audiences with her violin playing for 14 years, but now she’s capturing excited attention for her baking prowess. She just took 1st AND 2nd prize in the Flavored category of the Shortbread Contest at the Scottish Highland Games!

It’s been an exciting week for theater-goers in Spokane, with the smash hit musical Hadestown playing at the First Interstate Center. Their traveling performers are stunningly talented, but, sadly, not immune to the realities of Covid. Fortunately Spokane is home to local musicians who were able to step in! You can see Spokane Symphony musicians Mateusz Wolski and Stephen Swanson (the ”Swanski Wolskson Twins”) on stage and in costume playing with this incredible show through the end of this weekend!

SSO cellist Louise Butler is in the news! Those of us who hate mowing can rejoice, because Louise has proven that there are far more natural (and photogenic!) uses for a yard than to have a lawn.

Louise Butler ditched her lawnmower years ago. She doesn't like the chore, so over time, Butler pulled out patches of grass near her South Hill home to replace them with various wildflowers and perennials.

The Upscale Sale is underway, and you’ve still got nearly two hours to get here if you want to experience “first choice” day! But you’ll have until the end of the weekend to find your treasures and benefit the Spokane Symphony. We can’t thank the amazing Spokane Symphony Associates enough for the amazing work they do. They’re such an amazing organization that some of our own musicians couldn’t resist joining the fun! 2/3 of the Marshall family’s SSO players, Lynne and James, are here to volunteer today, and more will be here through the weekend.

MultiCare Deaconess has been inviting solo and small groups of Spokane Symphony musicians to the hospital campus for occasional performances.

We musicians would love to hear from you! If you’re a fan of any part of what it is we do (whether it’s how immaculately we render the legato of septuplet arpeggiation in the later repertoire of the Third Viennese School or if you just like the concert tailcoats) let us know via the survey link below!

The Spokane Symphony has canceled this weekend’s concerts due to heightened concern around COVID.

Masterworks 4: Eckart Returns, scheduled for Saturday, January 15th at 8:00 p.m. and Sunday, January 16th at 3:00 p.m. at Martin Woldson Theater at The Fox, will be rescheduled for a future date.

The Fox Theater Box Office will be in touch with ticketholders when a new date for this concert is announced.

“We regret having to cancel Masterworks 4, but look forward to presenting it, and welcoming Conductor Laureate Eckart Preu back at a future date,” said Spokane Symphony Executive Director Jeff vom Saal.

“Any and all efforts we can take to reduce community transmission and support our healthcare system is vital. We can all make a difference by getting vaccinated, getting boosted, and wearing properly-fitted masks. Although avoiding large community gatherings at this time is necessary, I look forward to being with everyone at the Fox Theater again soon,” said Dr. Francisco Velázquez
Thank you for your continued support and patronage of the Spokane Symphony and the Martin Woldson Theater at the Fox.

The Spokane Symphony is taking a couple of weeks off (though make sure to catch our Inland Northwest Opera friends next weekend at the Fox), but that doesn’t mean our musicians are idle. Tonight you can see longtime SSO percussionist Bryan Bogue with the band Super Sparkle at the Lucky You Lounge. The venue happens to be located on a street called Sunset Boulevard, so you can pretend to be in West Hollywood without ever leaving Spokane.

All sales are final. Lucky You Lounge is 21+ with no exceptions. Show doors open at 7pm. Restaurant open at 3pm. Basement Lounge open at 6pm

With the World Series coming up many are thinking about the Hall of Fame. But did you know the Spokane Symphony has a Hall of Famer? It’s true! Our saxophonist Greg Yasinitsky is a member of the Washington Music Educators Hall of Fame. He has been a professor at Washington State University for many years, and was director of its School of Music for seven of those years. But Greg does more than just write on chalkboards or play the solos from Bolero or Pictures at an Exhibition at the Fox. He also fronts a very fine jazz ensemble, and you can go hear them tomorrow, October 22nd, between 9:00 and 12:00 at Rico’s Public House in Pullman.

The world knows about its basketball team, but Gonzaga’s glories extend far beyond March Madness. If you’re out and about in Spokane on Monday the 18th you should head to Gonzaga’s beautiful new Myrtle Woldson Performing Arts Center at 7:30 to hear the Spokane Symphony’s principal flutist Bruce Bodden and principal clarinetist Chip Phillips in new pieces by local composer Shuying Li. The Gonzaga Symphony Orchestra will be conducted by SSO cellist Kevin Hekmatpanah.
