Happy Monday Browns Backers! We have our first victory in the bag, although it was a little tougher than we had hoped. We did not cover the 12.5 point spread, but a win is a win.
First the good: Baker Mayfield is leading the league in completion percentage through the first two games (81.6%), and is 2nd in yards per attempt (10.9). The interception he threw yesterday was because our rookie Anthony Schwartz ran the wrong route, so it's more on the receiver than him. Our (sort of) rookie Grant Delpit showed out and had an impactful sack and several other pressures.
The bad: Our defense still is missing a lot of tackles and gave up WAY too many yards (and scores) to a short-handed Texans team. It got better when their rookie QB came in for the injured Tyrod Taylor, but I think we still have a lot of room for improvement.
Injury Notes: Jarvis Landry tweaked his knee early in the game and was unable to return. However, early signs are that he has a sprained MCL and will only miss 2-3 weeks. MRI today sometime, so we are awaiting the results. Also Baker jammed his shoulder tackling on the INT, and had to leave the game. Luckily, the locker room x-rays were negative and he was able to come back and lead the charge to victory.
The future: Odell is projected to come back for our Week 3 tilt with the Chicago Bears. They just beat the Bengals (pretty handily until the end I might add), but will likely be starting their rookie first rounder Justin Fields due to an Andy Dalton knee injury. Our DC needs to come up with a game plan that will confuse and frustrate the rookie who will not have seen enough NFL reps to decipher a defense. We will need to give him the "Lamar" treatment and have a spy on the QB at all times - here's looking at you JOK.
Keep the faith Browns nation, we are going to have a good year!
