A Cottage Food Operation (CFO) in Washington state refers to a small-scale food production business that is allowed to prepare certain low-risk, non-potentially hazardous foods in a home kitchen for sale directly to consumers. These foods must meet specific regulations defined by the Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA).
The purpose of the Cottage Food Law is to allow small food entrepreneurs to produce and sell certain types of homemade foods without requiring a commercial kitchen or food establishment license. The law helps promote local food production while ensuring consumer safety.
Perks:

🍪 No need for a fancy kitchen, just your home setup.

Cons of not being in compliance:

“Are any of your products gluten free?” One of my most common questions with our macarons. While naturally they are, our cottage food operation is gluten FULL.

Knowing the difference can literally be life and death 💜

🍞 Gluten-Free vs. Gluten-Friendly: What’s the Difference? 🤔 🍞

Ever wondered about the difference between gluten-free and gluten-friendly? Here’s the scoop:

🔹 Gluten-Free means zero gluten! This is essential for those with celiac disease or a severe gluten sensitivity. No wheat, barley, or rye—nothing that contains gluten—can be part of the ingredients.

🔸 Gluten-Friendly, on the other hand, refers to foods that are made without gluten-containing ingredients but are not prepared in a completely gluten-free environment. They’re a safer choice for those with mild sensitivities but not ideal for those with celiac disease.

So, if you’re avoiding gluten for health reasons, always double-check and choose gluten-free for peace of mind. 🙌
