We want to take a moment to thank the City of Elgin for honoring us with a Proclamation during Black History Month. The city has recognized us as a Black-owned business and vital community asset, a local example of the impact Black-owned businesses have to increase community strength and opportunity. We are so grateful to operate and live in this diverse community and we appreciate the outpouring of support you all show us.

We are standing on the shoulders of our ancestors. Ancestors who shed much blood, boycotted and walked miles to change laws so that we could stand where we are today. We know the stories. The history -Black History, American History- that some would like us to forget. I was raised by my grandmother who attended Emmett Till’s funeral. Emmett Till was the sacrificial lamb of the Civil Rights Movement. My grandmother was friends with Mamie Till. This history is more recent than we’d like to remember and if we fail to teach it, we will repeat it.

This month and every month, let us remember the wars that have already been won and the fights that must continue. To whom much is given, much is required. Elgin let’s GO!
