Cities of Palestine | Lod - Lud - Al-Lidd — اللدّ
As part of Yafa’s Cities of Palestine series, we continue our journey through the cities, stories, and heritage of Palestine — this time exploring Al-Lidd — اللد | Lod.
An ancient city at the heart of Palestine, Al-Lidd, known today as Lod, has been a meeting place for travelers, merchants, and pilgrims for centuries. Its strategic location connected Yafa and Jerusalem with the wider historic routes between Egypt and Syria, helping shape the city into an important center of movement, trade, and exchange.
Lod is especially known for its deep connection to Saint George (Al-Khadr). Tradition holds that his remains were brought to the city, where his tomb became a revered pilgrimage site. The historic Church of Saint George stands at the heart of the old city alongside the Great Mosque, reflecting centuries of rich religious and architectural history.
The old city was also home to Khan al-Hilu, markets, workshops, and mills. Lod became particularly known for its olive and sesame oil presses, with local production of tahini and sesame oil, while the fertile lands surrounding the city produced olives, sesame, grains, and citrus, including extensive orange groves. Its bustling Monday market drew people from surrounding towns and villages.
By the early 20th century, Lod had become one of Palestine’s great transportation crossroads. Its railway station connected it to the wider regional rail network, while Lydda Airport — today known as Ben Gurion International Airport — developed into an important international gateway.
