Pat has been a volunteer at Feed My Sheep for three years, after having moved from Michigan, where she had previous food cupboard experience. Here in Slippery Rock, she helps stock our shelves and assists clients as they pick out foods and other items they want. Favorite aspects of her experience here include meeting and working with other volunteers. Making new acquaintances among the helpers and guests has made her feel like a part of the community. Pat notes that she appreciates all of the work people do, a lot of it done behind the scenes and not highly visible, which benefits so many people!

Yesterday we were pleased to accept the proceeds from the April 17th Empty Bowls event. Slippery Rock High School student Greyson Thomas, his sister Genevieve, and Mr. Troy Parish, high school art teacher, presented the donation to Carol Lambert. Greyson coordinated the project, for which Slippery Rock and Allegheny College art students created approximately 300 ceramic bowls to be filled with soup made by North Country Brewing Co and served at their taproom location, and The Greg Brady Orchestra provided music. We are so appreciative of the many ways our community comes together to support our efforts!

Tonight!

We're proud to host Empty Bowls at the North Country Brewing Co.'s Taproom tonight rom 5–9PM — a project by Greyson Thomas in partnership with Slippery Rock High School, benefiting the Feed My Sheep Food Cupboard.

Here's how it works: purchase a handmade ceramic bowl crafted by Slippery Rock High School students and local artists, and it comes with a serving of soup — a simple but powerful reminder that not everyone's bowl is always full.

Plus, enjoy live music from The Greg Brady Orchestra from 6–9PM! 🎶

📅 April 17th | 5–9PM

Karen has volunteered at Feed My Sheep for about four years. Her main role is helping clients choose the food that they want. She says it feels good to give people what they need but can’t afford. Karen also sends thank-you notes to donors, whose help is greatly appreciated, and has assisted with deliveries during the summer lunch program.

Marilynn has been assisting the food cupboard since 2010. She became the organization’s secretary after her retirement in 2014, and has since been writing many thank you notes to donors as part of that role. She likes the fact that with food cupboard-related jobs, “you know you’re helping the people of our community.” Among her favorite memories are working with many other volunteers and seeing people happy during the holiday food distributions.

She has enjoyed working under the leadership of Carol, who, along with Sylvia, does a great job in running the food cupboard and with the summer lunch program. (That program, which began in 2012 and has adapted to a new delivery model since 2020, provides food to families of school-aged students in the Slippery Rock area during the summer when the school cafeteria doesn’t operate.)

Volunteer Spotlight: Mabel has been a volunteer at our food pantry since 2009, and is one of the familiar faces behind the counter where clients request their choice of meats, eggs, and dairy products. Every other week, the pantry receives delivery of 200-300 pounds of various meats, which Mable and others organize and put into the freezers, rotating stock as new products arrive. She and other helpers in the “meat department” have been trained and certified in the safe handling of foods. She also helps with other tasks, such as restocking shelves.

What Mabel most enjoys about her work at Feed My Sheep is meeting and serving people in the community. In particular, she finds the big holiday distributions for Thanksgiving and Christmas especially gratifying, with extra volunteers, many clients, and often a festive atmosphere.

We are very grateful for the donations that have been coming to us this winter from many community organizations and individuals. (And we offer a special thank-you to Jim, Mark, and Ken for delivering to our shut-ins each month!) For the upcoming spring season and Easter holiday, we would especially appreciate hearty, chunky-type canned soups. All donations, including monetary ones, are welcome, because they allow us to offer a variety of foods to our clients.
