gathered: chapter I... the food

A look back at what was served at the table.

Chapter I had five courses, each built around ingredients that felt familiar, seasonal, and close to home, with a few surprises along the way.

FIRST COURSE
Heirloom Tomato Gratin
Local Herb Butter · Seasoned Sourdough Crumb
A simple beginning built around late-summer tomatoes, herbs, and bread.

SECOND COURSE
Crab & Iowa Sweet Corn Pesto
Pine Nuts · Baby Spinach · Angel Hair · Pecorino
Sweet corn met pesto, pasta, and crab for a course that felt distinctly Iowa without being quite what you'd expect.

THIRD COURSE
Buffalo Pot Pie
Flaky Crust
Comfort food at heart. Warm, savory, and tucked beneath a flaky crust.

FOURTH COURSE
Petite Pork Tender Filet
Fire-Roasted Tomato Relish · Fancy Carrot · Whipped Potato · Merlot Jus
The main course, pork surrounded by the kind of things that belong beside it.

FIFTH COURSE
Brûléed crumb. Cheesecake
Blueberry Compote · Fresh Blueberries · Local Honey

And because the evening began at crumb., it only seemed right that it ended there too.

Five courses created for one night, served to one table.

That was the food of Chapter I.

And we're already thinking about what belongs on the table next.

We've had a little time to breathe, look back, and take it all in. And mostly, we're just grateful.

gathered. is about the table, but it has always been about the people at it.

Chapter I happened because a lot of people said yes.
Yes to joining us for dinner.
Yes to cooking, baking, plating, pouring, setting tables, washing dishes, and helping wherever help was needed.
Yes to stopping by, checking in, and being part of the evening. Even if only for a few minutes.

And then there were our guests.

You trusted us with an idea we'd never tried before. You took a seat at a table with familiar faces and strangers and helped turn a room inside Art SUX Gallery into something warm, communal, and a little bit special.

Looking back through these photos, that's what we'll remember most.

Not just what was served, but who was there.

To everyone who sat at the table, worked behind the scenes, lent a hand, stopped in, or cheered us on: thank you for being part of the first chapter.

We're incredibly grateful.

And we can't wait to gather again.

One of the most fun parts of owning crumb. has been the collaborations.

This past Saturday, we had the chance to team up with the Chefs from Main + Abbey for a live cooking demonstration at the Farmers Market—and crumb. brought the fresh pasta.

Mixed from scratch. Rolled by hand. Cut and cooked right there at the Market.

We love opportunities like this. Getting to work alongside talented people in our local food community, learn from each other, share what we each do, and make something great together is one of those parts of owning crumb. that we’re incredibly grateful for.

Sometimes crumb. is cinnamon rolls and cookies.

Sometimes it’s fresh pasta hanging from drying racks in the middle of the Farmers Market.

We’re pretty lucky it gets to be both.

Introducing gathered by crumb.

Our bakery has always been about more than what comes out of the oven.

It’s about the places we’ve been, the people we’ve met, the things we’ve learned, and the ideas we’ve brought home with us.

Gathered is where we bring those things together.

Dinners. Classes. Collaborations. Experiences.

Some will happen around a table. Some in the bakery. Some may take us somewhere completely different.

Each one will have its own story. Its own reason for bringing people together.

And soon, we begin with chapter I.

Welcome to gathered.

We will be closed today. We are still recovering from Planted and Plated. We had such an amazing time on Wednesday but needed to take a small break to get the bakery back in order and recuperate.

We will be back at it Saturday at the bakery only. We will not be at the Farmers Market.
